It can be confusing, even overwhelming, trying to navigate the legal matters facing
those caring for loved ones living with dementia. The next edition of Wyoming Dementia
Together (WDT) will tackle the subject Wednesday, Oct. 8, at 10:30 a.m. in a program
titled “Legal Considerations in Dementia: Wills and Trusts.”
The program will be presented by Nancy Norton, a Jackson attorney who specializes
in estate planning and elder law.
“Caring for a loved one facing cognitive decline is a journey filled with many challenges,”
Norton says. “One of the most important ways caregivers can provide support is through
thoughtful legal planning. I’ll guide you through key legal documents designed to
help your loved one maintain dignity and security even as their ability to make decisions
changes. Understanding these legal documents empowers caregivers to act confidently
and compassionately, ensuring your loved one’s wishes are honored.
“Learning about legal planning -- and doing it -- is an act of love and preparedness
that brings peace of mind through your loved one’s dementia journey.”
WDT, which operates under the direction of the University of Wyoming Center on Aging,
meets via Zoom every other Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. Pre-registration for the program
is required. Programs feature guest speakers and allow time for interaction from those
who attend online. WDT support staff members include dementia care professionals,
licensed clinical social workers, physical and occupational therapists, and caregivers
themselves.
Caregivers from throughout Wyoming and surrounding states have benefited.
Future WDT programs will feature “Care Partner Support Through Technology,” Oct. 22;
“Respite Care for Myself and My Loved One,” Nov. 5; “Peace, Love and Joy: Activities
for the Holiday Season,” Nov. 19; and “Peace, Love and Joy in the Holiday Season:
Caring for Your Loved One and Yourself,” Dec. 3. More information is available online
