UW-Led Wyoming Dementia Together Offers Program on ‘Driving Retirement’ for People with Dementia Oct. 21
Published October 19, 2026
“Driving and Dementia: When it’s Time to Stop” is the topic of a Wyoming Dementia
Together (WDT) program Wednesday, Oct. 21.
WDT is a statewide, nonprofit caregiver network operating through the University of
Wyoming’s Wyoming Center on Aging (WyCOA). WDT meets by Zoom call every other Wednesday
at 10:30 a.m. The free online programs feature guest speakers and allow time for interaction
from those who attend online.
Determining when a person living with dementia should retire from driving is a complex
and emotionally charged decision for families, says Kelly Osthoff, senior director
of programs for the Alzheimer’s Association, Wyoming Chapter.
“This can be an emotional and confusing issue for families,” Osthoff says. “Caregivers
want to protect their loved one’s dignity while ensuring their safety. This program
will help caregivers understand when to initiate these conversations and how to navigate
them with compassion.”
Osthoff will provide guidance on recognizing when driving is no longer safe; preparing
for conversations with loved ones; and identifying strategies to maintain mobility
and independence after driving retirement.
WDT includes dementia care professionals, licensed clinical social workers, physical
and occupational therapists and caregivers themselves. WDT began meeting in fall 2020
and has been offering online programming help.
Future WDT program topics will feature “Managing Finances in Dementia Care: Support
for Caregivers and Loved Ones,” Nov. 4; “Living Well with Dementia: Using Technology
to Stay Active and Connected,” Nov. 18; and “Peace, Love and Joy in the Holiday Season:
Caring for Your Loved One and Yourself,” Dec. 4.
