Big Transition
Danielle Johnson was working in a rural urgent care/clinic in Central Colorado when this picture was taken earlier in the year. “Having just transitioned from pediatric nursing,” says Johnson, “I have to say this has been an interesting time to transition. Because of how rural we are, we are a primary care clinic but also an urgent care. We have completely split our clinic to "healthy" and "sick" sides with separate entrances so as to limit exposure to anyone coming in. We have had to be very creative with PPE, screening patients, and making sure everyone has access to care during this time. We are doing a lot of tele-health visits, doing lab draws/vaccines/finger sticks on patients in their cars so they do not have to come into the clinic, and decreasing our close interaction as staff so we prevent illness within our numbers.”
Be Ready for Anything
“Something I learned the other day,” continues Johnson, “was to always be ready for anything, even amidst a pandemic. We are always on the lookout for the typical COVID symptoms, and I had a patient come in that had shortness of breath and a couple other things. I ended up doing an EKG on this patient and realized this person was having an active heart attack! Not what I was expecting, but we ended up doing everything we could for this patient and life-flighting them to a higher level of care.”
