Semester GPA

Office of the Registrar

The semester (or term) grade point average (GPA) is the sum of all grade points earned in a semester or term divided by all credit hours attempted for letter grade.

Credit hours in courses in which marks of I, W, S or U were assigned are not included in GPA calculation.

GPA = Total quality points earned divided by attempted credit hours

Quality points per class = Point value of letter grade multiplied by the number of credit hours.

Letter grade values: A=4.000; A-=3.667; B+=3.333; B=3.000; B-=2.667; C+=2.333; C=2.000; C-=1.667; D+=1.333; D=1.000; F=0.000

Example:

If a student has completed five classes during a given semester:

Classes

Grade

Letter Grade Value

Credit Hours

Quality Points

Class 1

B

3.000

3

9 (3.000x3)

Class 2

B+

3.333

2

6.666 (3.333x2)

Class 3

C-

1.667

4

6.668 (1.667x4)

Class 4

C

2.000

3

6 (2.000x3)

Class 5

A

4.000

2

8 (4.000x2)

Total credit hours attempted for a letter grade: 14

Total quality points earned: 28.334

GPA = 28.334/14 = 2.024

Note: Developmental courses do not count toward a student's earned hours or grade point average; these courses are applied toward a student's full-time status. Developmental courses are those mathematics and English courses with course numbers less than 1000 (e.g. MATH 0900, MATH 0925, and ENGL 0200), which are used only as prerequisites for other courses.
