The School of Energy Resources (SER) is pleased to welcome a new research scientist among its ranks in the Center for Economic Geology Research (CEGR). Dr. Ying Yu of Xi’an, China joined the department in February 2021.

A specialist in foam characterization and flow behavior in porous media, Yu brings a wealth of knowledge to CEGR where she will primarily work on the CarbonSAFE project, which has recently entered Phase III.

Yu attended Northwest University in Xi’an, China where she earned a B.S. in Geology and Earth Sciences in 2013. She then came to the University of Wyoming, where she studied petroleum engineering, earning both her M.S. in 2015 and her Ph.D. in 2020.

Under the tutelage of Dr. Soheil Saraji, Yu has published multiple articles on foam rheology, CO2 foam performance in porous media, and their potential applications in the fractured system, and her academic research has been cited by other professionals in multiple countries. Additionally, she has meticulously studied multi-phase flow behavior in reservoir formations, including the Bakken, Madison limestone, and tight sandstone reservoirs, as well as examined their potential geochemical storage capacity.

Dr. Yu is excited to join the CEGR team and is looking forward to the exciting new opportunities and challenges that may be in store while applying her expertise to the carbon capture, utilization and storage (CCUS) initiatives in the state.

“I am thrilled yet nervous to get on board since I know there will be both thorns and flowers along the road, but I am ready to experience them all,” she comments.

SER Director of Research and Director of CEGR, Scott Quillinan, comments on the close ties that Yu has shared with SER over the years.

“Throughout her graduate studies, Ying worked closely with CEGR on the Department of Energy-funded project, U.S./China Clean Energy Research Center,” says Quillinan. “In addition to her experimental skillset she brings international and unconventional reservoir experience to our carbon storage team, it is a privilege to have her here."
