Autumn Eakin, Assistant Director
Center for Economic Geology Research
As the longest-standing Center of Excellence at SER, CEGR research projects explore opportunities to leverage Wyoming’s distinctive geology and resources, develop these opportunities, diversify Wyoming’s economy, and maintain competitiveness in an evolving energy sector. Over the years, the team has undergone significant expansion. Currently, the Center houses fourteen full-time staff members dedicated to areas of exploration, including carbon management, oil and gas, and critical minerals and rare earth elements, with additional growth anticipated to meet the demands of active and impending projects.
Joining SER in 2024 from the energy industry, Eakin brings a wealth of experience and expertise to this pivotal position. With a distinguished background in geological research and project management, she has consistently demonstrated exceptional leadership and a deep understanding of complex scientific initiatives.
Her extensive background, including work in the oil and gas industry with Chevron and as a research professional at CEGR, makes her an ideal fit to champion CEGR’s mission. She brings specialized expertise in subsurface characterization of geomechanics, seals and reservoirs, and a proven ability to cultivate strategic partnerships with industry stakeholders.
“When Autumn joined the CEGR team, she made an immediate impact and impressed us with her professional acumen, leadership, and collegiality among the research group,” says CEGR Director Fred McLaughlin. “This new role is critical for our continued, strategic growth and success, and I am confident that Autumn will excel in it.”
Eakin expressed her enthusiasm for the new challenge.

“I am truly honored to step into this new role,” said Eakin. “Since joining CEGR, I’ve been inspired every day by the dedication and creativity of this team. I care deeply about the work we’re doing and the people doing it. I’m excited to help create opportunities for us to grow, collaborate, and continue contributing to Wyoming’s energy future.”
SER is committed to employing high-quality candidates to serve the state of Wyoming through its research, academic offerings, and outreach program. The impact of SER’s research team is felt across Wyoming and beyond. SER aims to celebrate the achievements of its dedicated staff and recognize their contributions accordingly through advancement and other opportunities.
Additional notable promotions among the SER research team, effective July 1, include Tao Bai to Associate Research Professional in CEGR, Robert Gregory to Senior Research Associate in CEGR, and James Amato to Associate Research Professional in the 3D Visualization Center.
“We are fortunate at the School of Energy Resources to have an exceptionally talented, committed, and hard-working team of professionals across our research program,” says SER Senior Director of Research Scott Quillinan. “Nothing makes us prouder than to see colleagues thrive and deliver meaningful contributions to Wyoming through their work. We are proud of all that Autumn, Tao, Bob, and James have accomplished and look forward to their continued excellence and contributions in their new roles.”
