The University of Wyoming School of Energy Resources (SER) welcomed Sanzhar Begimbetov to the research team in the Center for Economic Geology Research (CEGR) as an assistant research professional.
A native of Almaty, Kazakhstan, Begimbetov earned his B.S. in Petroleum Geology from Royal Holloway, University of London, before earning his M.S. in Geology and Earth Science from the Colorado School of Mines.
Poised to work primarily with CEGR’s oil and gas and subsurface research teams, he brings extensive international experience, having conducted oil and gas research and worked in Asia, Europe, and North America.
Prior to his graduate studies, Begimbetov spent four years as a senior geoscientist at KMG Engineering in Kazakhstan, where he led the development and execution of exploration portfolios that resulted in successfully drilled wells. While at Mines, he conducted Chevron-sponsored research in New Mexico that evaluated the relationship between depositional processes and geomechanical properties, with a focus on fracture distributions in lower-slope carbonate deposits.
“We are very excited to have Sanzhar join the SER team,” says Tim Fischer, oil and gas program manager in CEGR. “We are at a critical point in a lot of our oil and gas research projects, and we are hoping to scale up our efforts with the unique expertise that he brings in stratigraphy and recovery optimization.”
In his new position, Begimbetov will apply his skillset of sedimentology, stratigraphy, metallurgy, reserve estimation, and geologic modeling to key initiatives, including the Mowry Project, subsurface characterization projects, and critical mineral recovery.
“I am very pleased to be here at the School of Energy Resources,” says Begimbetov. “This position blends my passion for research and industry-based projects. I am also excited to broaden my expertise and gain exposure to carbon management and critical minerals. SER has a reputation for excelling in all these areas, and I look forward to being a part of such a well-rounded research team.”
