Higher Education Emergency Relief Fund Reporting
Emergency Financial Aid Grants to Students
University of Wyoming
Quarterly Report and Disclosure
September 30, 2020
University of Wyoming (UW) acknowledges it signed and returned to the U.S. Department of Education the Certification and Agreement on April 14, 2020, and gives the assurance that UW intends to use 50% of the funds received under section 18004(a) (1) of the CARES Act to provide Emergency Financial Aid Grants to students.
The total amount of funds UW received on April 24, 2020, from the Department of Education for distribution to students is $3,306,790.
The total amount of Emergency Financial Aid Grants distributed to students under Section 18004(a) (1) of the CARES Act as September 30, 2020, is $2,632,500.
The estimated total number of students at the institution eligible to participate in programs under Section 484 in Title IV of the Higher Education Act of 1965 and thus eligible to receive Emergency Financial Aid Grants to students under Section 18004(a)(1) of the CARES Act is 5,458.
The total number of students who have received an Emergency Financial Aid Grant to students under Section 18004(a) (1) of the CARES Act is 3,046.
The method(s) used to determine which students receive Emergency Financial Aid Grants and how much they would receive under Section 18004(a)(1) of the CARES Act is as follows:
A currently enrolled undergraduate or graduate student for term of disbursement
A valid Free Application for Federal Aid (FAFSA) on file
Meeting Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP)
Enrolled in at least one on campus class prior to March 13, 2020
Student Type Prioritization
Pell eligible undergraduate students – award amount $1200
Non-Pell eligible undergraduate and graduate students - award amount $500
Eligible Expenses
Food, Housing, Course Materials, Technology, Transportation, Health or Child Care
The instructions, directions, or guidance provided by UW to eligible students concerning the Emergency Financial Aid Grants was sent via University email. The email contained a direct link to the application housed within our secure WyoScholarships portal.
The Dean of Students office (DOS) also offered emergency funds through our Foundation and required an application. All students that completed the DOS application were awarded CARES Act funds if eligible. The DOS emergency funds were offered to those students that did not qualify for CARES such as international students, students totally online, students not meeting Satisfactory Academic Progress, and/ or those with no FAFSA on file.
Pell eligible students that did not complete an application were awarded since this population of students demonstrate the highest financial need.
Student inquiries after the application closed resulted in about 10 additional awards.
Since funds are still available a new application will be directed to eligible students to apply for the 20-21 academic year.
If funds are still available appeals can be reviewed for those documented expenses which exceed the amount of the award. The maximum award will not exceed $6,195 for any student.
