Micheal Lance interned at the Argonne Leadership Computing Facility

My time at the Argonne Leadership Computing Facility (ALCF) went by in the blink of an eye. It feels like yesterday I was just barely setting up my desk, and today I am a contributor to the SYCL spec. I am incredibly grateful to the Performance Engineering Team and my mentor, Thomas Applencourt, for some of the most enjoyable and educational months of my undergraduate career. I am excited to take the lessons I learned and apply them to work here at UW. I am excited to return to the ALCF for another summer.

Virginia May Herboldsheimer completed the LARB Summer Publishing Workshop

At the LARB Summer publishing workshop, I learned about the role of metadata in the publishing process. In particular, we simulated an entire publication pipeline, creating all the appropriate metadata at every step of the way. I learned how this data would be used in various computational and information pipelines. I also learned about BISACS, ISBNs, and other data, along with how to query databases such as Ingram and Edelweiss. This knowledge will prove valuable not only to future publishing career applications, particularly in marketing, but also to my Master's thesis. In the workshop, I got a taste of SEO, search engine optimization, and AEO, answer engine optimization. I plan to devote more time to learning these skills now that I see how essential they are to the digital infrastructure of publishing. I am incredibly grateful to the school of computing for contributing to the tuition for this program and allowing me to gain practical experience in my desired field. 

 

The School of Computing helped support Virginia’s participation in the workshop, providing her an opportunity to develop new computational skills and explore their applications within the humanities.
