Cadastral Surveying Certification

The Cadastral Land Surveying Program (LSP) at the University of Wyoming is a Certificate program designed for working professionals. It is 100% on-line to serve those individuals seeking or exploring licensure. LSP does not award a degree and is not ABET accredited at UW. If you are pursuing a bachelor’s degree you may add a minor in surveying to be awarded simultaneously with any of UW’s ABET accredited Engineering degrees. Professional licensure is three pronged: education, experience, and examination. UW cannot guarantee licensure or certification in any state as each jurisdiction has its own laws and regulations regarding employment. To pursue licensure, students that finish the LSP at UW would need to apply via the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying (NCEES) to take the competency examinations. These include the Fundamentals of Surveying exam and the Principals and Practice of Surveying exam and pay the associated examination fees. The NCEES Organization does not grant licenses but reports the results to the state or jurisdiction in which you apply to practice. Students that qualify for a Surveying Internship (SI), also known as Surveyor-in-Training certificate and pass the respective NCEES exam(s) shall also meet the jurisdiction’s experience requirements prior to applying for a license from the individual state boards to work as a professional surveyor. Currently, many jurisdictions have an additional state specific exam to address the specific complexities of concentration for surveying within their borders. If you have any questions about the Land Surveying program and certification please contact Shelley Macy, PE, at shafner@uwyo.edu the Director of the UW LSP or Compliance & Review Specialist Erika Helgeson at ehelgeso@uwyo.edu or 307-766-3423. Please select from the following list below of U.S. States, Territories, or Districts to see if our program meets, may meet, may not meet, does not meet, or is unsure of meeting the requirements for a student to obtain a license and practice in the the following areas.

There is no specific engineering degree or formal education required in Arizona for land surveyors. A person must have an ABET accredited engineering degree and have taken the NCEES to apply without any extra application process. If you do not have an ABET accredited engineering degree or any formal education you should submit an application to sit for the NCEES examination to the Arizona State Board of Technical Registration. The Board’s approval process may take eight to twelve weeks depending on the applicant’s qualifications and timely submission of required documents. If the Board has not received an application from you and approved you to sit for a NCEES national examination, you will not be authorized to take the examination. Colorado has several pathways to Land Surveying licensure. The University of Wyoming certificate meets the base education requirements for Colorado. "Credit for Correspondence Courses and Other Forms of Distance Learning. Progressive land surveying experience for education may be granted for completed correspondence courses or other forms of distance learning if, according to the educational institution, there is oversight by an accredited degree program department of the course content, examinations, and faculty." A person that does not have a Bachelor's in Land Surveying must have four years of experience before applying for the Land Surveying Internship (LSI) certificate. If an applicant has a land surveying license (LSI or PLS) before application, than they can apply for a Colorado license by the Comity instructions. All applicants must take the NCEES Fundamentals examination (FS) and pass. For anyone applying that does not hold a previous license: the applicant must already have a Land-Surveyor Intern certificate in the state they are applying from and have been under direct supervision by a Professional Land Surveyor (PSL), if an applicant meets this qualifications and have at least 4 years of surveying experience, they can then follow the LSI application instructions. The University of Wyoming College of Engineering has ABET accreditation, please check with an advisor to make sure the engineering degree being earned if one under ABET accreditation. UW does not guarantee employment in Colorado, only application for employment. Please see the weblinks below for more information.

For students that already have a Professional Land Surveying license they will need to follow the PLS application instructions and pass a Tennessee Specific State examination.
