Law Licensure

The University of Wyoming Law Program has the possibility for licensure after graduation. Graduates of the University of Wyoming College of Law may apply to become licensed attorneys after graduation. To do so, graduates must take and pass a bar examination in their preferred jurisdiction in order to practice. Each state and U.S. Territory have different requirements for their respective bar exams. Thirty-six jurisdictions have adopted the Uniform Bar Exam (UBE). The UBE is a standardized bar exam created by the National Conference of Bar Examiners (NCBE) and is uniformly administered and scored. However, each jurisdiction is responsible for setting passing score rates. NCBE provides a Comprehensive Guide to Bar Admission Requirements, which contains a synopsis of each state’s bar admissions requirements – including those beyond the educational requirements – and relevant dates. Information on the NCBE exams can be found here: https://www.ncbex.org/exams/. The University of Wyoming College of Law Juris Doctor degree program is accredited by the American Bar Association (ABA). You can read more information about the ABA here: https://www.americanbar.org/Currently, successful completion of the JD at the University of Wyoming College of Law meets the educational requirements to sit for the bar exam in every state. To receive a Juris Doctorate from the College of Law, students must graduate with 90 credit hours, and complete six credit hours of approved experiential learning courses as well as an advanced writing requirement. The ABA accreditation qualifies every student completing the program to sit for the bar exam in every U.S. state and territory. In most jurisdictions, students must also take and pass the Multistate Professional Responsibility Exam (MPRE) before taking the bar exam. Information about the MPRE exam can be found here: https://www.ncbex.org/exams/mpre/. UW cannot guarantee that a student will receive licensure in any U.S. State, District, or Territory. Every applicant is reviewed on a case by case basis for selection and must pass examination with approved scores. Please select from the list below of U.S. States, Districts and Territories as a guide to determine if the UW Law degree meets or does not meet the education requirements. Some states and territories have additional specific requirements to be met outside of education. For these areas, the additional requirements are provided. In all cases, check on the latest available information with the specific state licensing board. For more information or questions you can contact Assistant Dean Lindsay Hoyt, J.D. at lhoyt1@uwyo.edu or you can contact Compliance and Review Specialist Erika Helgeson at ehelgeso@uwyo.edu or (307)-766-3423.
