Psychology Licensure

The University of Wyoming Clinical Psychology Doctoral Program has the possibility for licensure after graduation. Students that want to practice as a clinical psychologist after graduation will need to apply for licensure to practice. Students will also need to take and pass the Examination for Professional Practice in Psychology (EPPP) given by the Association of State and Provincial Psychology Board (ASPPB), exam information can be found at this website: https://www.asppb.net/page/EPPPSignup. UW cannot guarantee that a student will receive licensure in any U.S. State, District, or Territory. Every applicant is reviewed on a case by case basis for selection. U.S. States, Districts and Territories

May meet with conditions

Alabama requires 27 credit hours in the following course areas: Abnormal behavior, Personality assessment, Intellectual assessment, Theory of mental disorder treatment and intervention, Advanced clinical electives, Psychological assessment practicum, and Psychological intervention practicum. UW is unsure if we fully meet the advance clinical electives requirement, the Alabama State board will need to determine this based off the submitted official transcripts. Applicants need a minimum of 11 months of post-doctoral internship hours before application. Applicants will also need 4 psychologist references, one must be from an academic source. Applicants will also need to fill out an application to take the EPPS (EPPP) exam and once granted permission, will need to pass the exam before licensure will be granted. Candidates must also pass a state jurisprudence test, the Professional Standards Examination (PSE). Exams are scheduled on weekday mornings in Montgomery. The PSE covers the APA code of ethics as well as applicable Alabama laws. A candidate may request a copy of the code of ethics from the APA. The Alabama state board notes that is can take several months to be awarded licensure. UW meets the base educational requirements for the Alaska State board and the 1,500 hours pre-doctoral internship requirements. Applicants for licensure will need permission from the Alaska State board to take the EPPS examination. Applicants must pass the EPPS (EPPP) exam before licensure will be awarded. Candidates must also pass a state laws and rules examination. It is scheduled four times a year at locations in Anchorage, Fairbanks, and Juneau. The Division will provide a study packet, upon request, to applicants who have been approved to sit for the examination. Upcoming examination dates are posted on the Board site. A candidate should submit the application 45 days prior to a scheduled Board meeting in order to be scheduled for the next available examination. Applicants will also need 1,500 hours in post-doctoral internship that can be completed between 10-24 months. UW meets the Arizona State Board base educational course requirements. Applicants will need to apply with the Arizona State Board to take the EPPS (EPPP) exam and will need to pass the exam after application approval to take it. Applicants will also need a total of 3,000 hours of supervised experience, 1,500 of these hours must be earned during an internship. UW offer 1,500 hours of pre-doctoral internship hours. The other 1,500 hours may be some combination of pre-internship or postdoctoral supervised practice. Any credited pre-internship must meet the standards set forth in 32-2071 (the Board notes that many states are not as flexible about the second 1,500 hours and cautions candidates who are planning to practice in other jurisdictions to check regulations elsewhere). Candidates may submit applications to the Arizona Board when they have completed at least 1,500 hours of internship (half the total experience requirement). UW meets the educational course requirements for the Arkansas State Board. Students must complete the equivalent of at least three years of graduate study, with at least one year spent in residency, UW also meets this requirement. For applicants to achieve full licensure, the candidate will need at least two years of professional experience. At least 2,000 hours must be earned after the doctoral degree is granted. UW does not guarantee this experience will be met after finishing our doctoral degree program. The post-doctoral supervised experience may be accomplished in 50 40-hour work weeks. Part-time work is acceptable if it is pre-approved by the Board. Unlicensed practitioners will use titles like “resident” that communicate their status to the public. California has specific course work outside of the basic coursework for clinical psychologyu licensure. The following extra coursework is required in California: human sexuality (10 contact hours), substance abuse (15 contact hours), spousal abuse (15 contact hours), child abuse (7 contact hours), and aging/ long-term care (10 contact hours). UW meets the education requirements for the Colorado State Board. UW also meets the psychology program requirements for a practicum of at least 400 hours and an internship of at least 1,500 hours. Applicants will need to apply to the Colorado State Board to take the EPPP exam and must pass the exam after approval. Candidates will also take the Colorado Mental Health Jurisprudence Examination that covers mental health statutes, Board rules, confidentiality and privilege, prohibited activities, emergency procedures, and disciplinary provisions. The jurisprudence exam is available online for an $18 fee. A candidate who does not pass will receive diagnostic information and be allowed to retest after a 10 day wait period. Colorado Require 1,500 hours of post-doctoral experience, a portion of the hours may be under the supervision of a board-certified psychiatrist. At least 75 hours of direct supervision must be provided (at least 50 of them individual). Research and teaching may be counted toward the 1,500 hours. However, neither may comprise more than 500 hours. No more than 375 hours of experience may be under the supervision of a board-certified psychiatrist, and no more than 17.75 hours of direct supervision may be credited. Colorado expects training in racial and ethnic bases of behavior at the graduate level, but will accept academic coursework in lieu of this. A candidate has the option of taking up to 24 months to fulfill an 1,800 hour requirement; the candidate may not credit more than 40 hours a week. Applicants will need to Delaware State Board Approval to take the EPPP exam, and will need to pass the exam to qualify for licensure. Applicants will also need a total of 3,000 hours of supervised practice. !,5000 hours are earned during the pre-doctoral internship, It may be completed in a period of one to two years (48 to 104 weeks). At least 50% of the total hours must be spent in clinical activities; 25% of the total time must be face-to-face client services. UW meets this pre-doctoral qualification. Applicants will need to earn another 1,500 hours of post-doctoral experience. The 1,500 hours of supervised post-doctoral experience is generally completed in a period of one to three years. At least 75% of the supervision must be provided by a licensed psychologist; the remaining 25% may be provided by other licensed mental health professionals. An hour of direct, face-to face supervision is required for every 10 hours of clinical work; if the hours of clinical work are not divisible by ten, the candidate must round up to determine how many hours of supervision are required. The only listed education requirements are that the institutional must be accredited by a U.S. Department of Education approved accrediting body. The University of Wyoming is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission (HLC) a U.SD. Department of Education approved accrediting body. The UW Clinical Psychology Program is also program accredited by the American Psychological Association (APA) and meets this District of Columbia requirement. Applicants will need to apply with the District of Columbia board to take the EPPP exam and must pass the exam to qualify for licensure. For D.C. the EPPP may be attempted once education is complete; a candidate may test while in the process of completing supervision requirements. DC has adopted, as the standard of passing, one-half a standard deviation below the nationwide mean score. There is a District/Local Examination that assesses knowledge of the APA code of ethics as well as DC statutes and rules. Study materials will be sent to candidates. The passing score is 75%. A candidate who fails the DC/Local examination on a first attempt will be allowed to submit another license application and retake the examination the next time it is offered. A candidate who fails a second time will need to wait six months. Applicants will also need 4,000 hours of practical supervised work experience. At least 2,000 hours must be postdoctoral; up to 2,000 hours of pre-doctoral internship may be credited. A candidate who is completing 2,000 hours at the postdoctoral level will be expected to complete requirements in a period of one to two years. A candidate who is fulfilling all 4,000 hours at the postdoctoral level may have up to three years. In some instances, the Board may extend the time limits for good cause. The University of Wyoming also meets the nationally recognized accreditation requirements, UW is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission (HLC) which is formerly known as the North Central Association. Applicants will need to apply to the Idaho State board to take the EPPP exam and will need to pass to qualify for licensure. Applicants also need to complete two years of work experience (A year is considered to be 1,000 hours and can be completed in as little as 12 months or as many as 36). The first year may commence after the student has completed at least a year of graduate study. The second must take place at the postdoctoral level.’ Postdoctoral supervision is to be under the supervision of a licensed psychologist. The supervisee will need an hour or supervision for every 20 hours of service delivery. Supervision normally takes place on a weekly basis. Students will need to gain 2,500 hours more of post-doctoral work experience to qualify for licensure. Applied psychology internships are not to begin until after the psychology student has completed 300 hours of practicum; these 300 hours are typically done for academic credit and are not counted toward supervised practice requirements. At this level, the supervisee will need one hour a week of face-to-face supervision and one hour of additional learning experiences. UW meets meets the educational course requirements for the Massachusetts State Board. The issue is that 1,600 of pre-doctoral internship are required and UW offers 1,500 internship hours. If a student manages to get the required 1,600 hours they will still need 1,600 hours of post doctoral work experience. Work experience must be in a substantially similar branch of psychology as the one in which the degree was earned. The employee must use a title that accurately conveys his or her status as an unlicensed professional; this may be resident, fellow, or intern. Applicants will also need to apply with the Massachusetts State Board to take the EPPP exam and will need to pass to qualify for licensure. UW meets the education course requirements for the Michigan State Board. The issue is Michigan requires 2,000 hours of pre-doctoral internship and UW offer 1,500 internship hours. If a student manages to reach the 2,000 hours required they will still need to complete 2,000 hours of post-doctoral work hours.  While accruing hours, a post-doctoral candidate works under a limited license. The individual must be under the supervision of a Board-designated psychologist. Work is to take place at an agency, hospital, or other setting deemed acceptable by the Board. The resident may work part-time or full-time, 16 to 40 hours per week. During this time, the supervisee must meet face-to-face with a supervisor at least four hours a month. The issue is that Minnesota requires 1,800 hours of pre-doctoral internship hours, UW offer 1,500 pre-doctoral internship hours. The intern will work at least 20 hours a week and complete the internship in a period of 12 to 30 months. The intern will need at least two hours of supervision a week; at least one must be one-on-one with the primary supervisor. An intern who works more than 40 hours will need an additional hour of supervision for every 20 hours, or portion thereof. For students that may meet this 1,800 hour requirement they will also need to earn 1,800 hours of post-doctoral work experience. Applicants will need to finish a re-doctoral internship and meet 1,500 hours or post doctoral work experience.  It is acceptable to work 20 to 50 hours a week and accrue the experience in 12 to 24 months. A health service provider will need a primary supervisor who is endorsed as a health service provider or is eligible for such endorsement. A candidate will have a primary supervisor who oversees training. In some cases, clinical supervision will be delegated to one or more other qualified individuals. A trainee who is working under multiple supervisors will meet with the primary supervisor at least one hour a month and with clinical supervisors at least one hour per week. A trainee who has only one supervisor will meet with that individual for at least one hour per week. Applicants will also need to apply to the Missouri State Board to take the EPPP exam and will need to pass it. Missouri also has a state specific exam. Applicants should expect to receive registration information for state-specific tests as they become eligible. UW meets the education and APA Accreditation requirements for the Montana State Board. Montana requires A total of 3,200 hours of experience. The first 1,600 may be earned during a pre-doctoral internship, UW offers 1,500 pre-doctoral internship hours. Applicants must earn the rest of the 3,200 hours post-doctoral. This may take place over a period of one to two years. A candidate may not exceed two years unless an exception has been granted by the Board. At least half of the work experience is to be spent directly providing clinical services. Applicants must apply with the Montana State Board to take the EPPP exam and must pass to qualify for licensure.
