About the Native American Education Program
Make an impact on the lives of Native American learners by completing the Teaching American Indian Children (TAIC) certificate and endorsement program. This program may be completed on its own or in conjunction with a graduate degree at UW. The TAIC course of study includes five comprehensive classes that cover Native American education history, multicultural education practices and instructional methods. It equips educators with practical methods to address the challenges and opportunities that come with teaching Native American students.
This certificate is part of the larger Native American and Indigenous Studies (NAIS) program at UW. UW’s NAIS program examines the history, economy and political systems within Indigenous communities. It also helps students develop an understanding of Native culture through courses, community events and the Native American Education, Resource and Cultural Center.
If you’re already enrolled in a UW graduate program, you need approval from an advisor to add the TAIC certificate to your degree. To apply for this program on its own, you’ll need to complete the UW graduate application.
UW’s Native American and Indigenous Studies (NAIS) program is a tight-knit group that
emphasizes developing meaningful relationships with Native American communities and
students. In the certificate program, you’ll partner with local schools and tribal
organizations that support Native American children. Through service learning opportunities,
you’ll apply the theories and methods you’re learning in real-world settings. These
experiences will enhance your understanding of Native communities’ cultural dynamics
and educational needs.
