About the Native American Studies Minor

UW’s Native American and Indigenous studies (NAIS) program offers an interdisciplinary exploration of Native North American cultures and histories. Its wide range of courses makes it an excellent addition to many degrees. The program includes 18 credit hours of courses on Native American literature, culture and history. Through small, discussion-based courses and service learning projects, you’ll gain deep insight into Indigenous communities. Our graduates go on to make a difference in education, research, social work, healthcare and more.

Outside of the Arts and Sciences building

The NAIS minor is reserved for those pursuing an undergraduate degree at UW.

Students in the NAIS program have access to vibrant campus organizations and professional development opportunities. Encouraged to get involved in the local community, our students are pillars of each of the below organizations. In addition to student-run clubs and societies, many of our students attend and present at conferences related to Native American and Indigenous studies.

Native American and Indigenous Studies Minor Highlights

Faculty Mentorship

The small nature of our program lends itself to a low student-to-faculty ratio, increasing the opportunity for one-on-one mentorship and guidance for all students. Our faculty collaborate with students on research and serve as resources to help students find academic conferences and job opportunities.

Our People

With a strong emphasis on understanding tribal sovereignty and its implications in contemporary society, the NAIS minor explores how tribal governments function in modern-day society. We take a look at tribal governments’ relationships with state and federal entities and how contemporary issues like land rights, cultural preservation and political autonomy impact Indigenous communities.

The Native American & Indigenous studies program organizes engaging events including guest lectures, workshops and seminars. These events offer the opportunity to network with scholars, activists and tribal leaders, in addition to building connections with peers.

UW’s Native American Education and Research Cultural Center (NAERCC) is a welcoming space where Indigenous students find community, resources and support. The facility includes a computer lab, study areas, cultural programming and events. It also offers internships and hosts student groups like the Keepers of the Fire.
