UWs Center on Aging Highlights National Caregiver Month

The Wyoming Center on Aging (WyCOA) at the University of Wyoming is recognizing the impact of caregivers across Wyoming communities with a free webinar series during National Caregiver Month.

To celebrate and support Wyoming caregivers, WyCOA is launching a new webinar series, titled “Caring for the Caregiver.” The four-part series -- beginning Wednesday, Nov. 4 -- will focus on supporting caregivers of people living with dementia during the holiday season.

Other webinars are scheduled Wednesday, Nov. 18; Wednesday, Dec. 2; and Wednesday, Dec. 16.

AARP estimates that 74,000 Wyoming caregivers provide 62 million hours of unpaid care each year worth an estimated economic value of $980 million.

WyCOA’s series begins with an introduction to the caregiving network and an overview of how caregivers can practice self-care. The following sessions will focus on resiliency and mindfulness during the holidays; communicating with family and friends; and celebrating the holidays in a meaningful way during difficult times.

The sessions will be a good opportunity for learning, and sharing successes and struggles with other caregivers who have a family member living with dementia, says Sabine Schenck, program coordinator.

“During the holiday season, it is easy for caregivers to forget about the importance of their own self-care,” she adds. “This series will provide insight and education on how to celebrate the holiday season with your loved ones with dementia, incorporate meaningful family time and take time out for self-care.” 

The presenters are from the Wyoming Dementia Together Caregiver Network, scheduled to launch in January. The network is a community of experienced professionals who collaborate with caregivers to provide confidential education and support free of cost to those whose loved ones are living with dementia, Schenck says.
