UW Cowboy Coaches to Produce Student Podcast

May 6, 2021
John Houghton and Boone Schieffer

The University of Wyoming’s Office of Student Success and Graduation has introduced a new student-created podcast.

The “Cowboy Coaching Podcast” will be recorded and produced by UW’s Cowboy Coaches -- a group of UW juniors and seniors who serve as peer-to-peer mentors on campus. Hosted by UW seniors Boone Schieffer, of Smoot, and John Houghton, of Modesto, Calif., the podcast will cover a wide variety of college topics, including personal struggles and successes, tips for academic success, and also will feature guests from important areas of the university.

The “Cowboy Coaching Podcast” is part of the ongoing efforts of the Office of Student Success and Graduation to create a successful environment for all UW students. The podcast will provide current students with a casual and fun listening experience, while also equipping them with knowledge and tools to maximize the college experience.

“The podcast is a dynamic way to hear and learn from students and professionals who have tips, tricks and experiences that will help you make the most out of your college journey,” says Nycole Courtney, associate vice president and dean of student success and graduation.

The Cowboy Coaches will work together to prepare unique and engaging content for each podcast episode. Suggestions for potential podcast topics can be sent to To listen to the podcast, go to

“Boone and I are so excited to have the opportunity to share stories from across our university community,” Houghton says. “We feel grateful to be able to build on the successes of the Cowboy Coaching program in the form of a podcast, and we will do our best to find topics that will help students find success on campus. We hope all those who tune in find themselves reconnected to campus in the midst of this virtual environment.”

The Cowboy Coaching program was developed during the 2020 fall semester to provide younger UW students with access to a peer mentor. Interested students or parents can submit their information to sign up for the program here.

The priority of the Office of Student Success and Graduation is to provide a welcoming, friendly and successful college experience for UW students. For questions, students or family members can email, or check out the website at, which is the one-stop shop for student resources.
