UW Department of Music Presents ‘American Trombone’ Sept. 7

August 29, 2022
Jiwon Han and Daniel Watt

“American Trombone,” featuring music from a trombonist and pianist duo, will be presented as part of the University of Wyoming Department of Music Faculty Recital Series Wednesday, Sept. 7.

UW Department of Music faculty members Daniel Watt, trombone and euphonium, and Jiwon Han, piano, will perform at 7:30 p.m. in the Buchanan Center for the Performing Arts recital hall. The recital is free and open to the public.

The program features music by American composers that spans genres from iconic jazz standards to a cinematic climax, highlighting the musical and technical capabilities of the trombone and euphonium.

Selections include “Concerto for Bass Trombone” by Eric Ewazen; “Rhapsody for Euphonium” by James Curnow; Conversations, Op. 42 by John La Montaine; “I’m Getting Sentimental Over You” by George Bassman and Ned Washington; and “Annie Laurie” by Arthur Pryor.

The recital concludes with the world premiere of “Battle Rhythm” by composer Brian Sadler. The piece depicts wartime scenarios through both video and audio effects. Those who may be sensitive to the subject material may choose to leave the hall before the piece begins.

Watt, a Colorado native, is an active freelance musician across the Front Range. He serves as principal trombonist with the Fort Collins Symphony, the Wyoming Symphony Orchestra and the Steamboat Springs Orchestra; and is second trombonist with the Cheyenne Symphony. Watt, who has been a UW Department of Music faculty member since 2016, is an instructor of trombone and euphonium. He maintains a private studio.

Han, a South Korean-born musician, is an award-winning pianist. He first gained attention in 1997 at age 10 when he appeared as a soloist with the Korean Philharmonic Orchestra performing Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 23 in A major, K. 488. The same year, Han gave a solo recital at Incheon Culture and Arts Center.

He performs as a chamber musician, orchestral pianist and collaborative pianist, and he also teaches and conducts regularly. Han has released two solo albums: “Debut” and “Romanticism.” Additionally, he has released two collaborative albums: “Bach-Schubert,” a live performance with violinist Zia Shin, and “Works by German Composers” with violinist Fangting Chen.

He is the staff collaborative pianist with the UW Department of Music.
