Viki Peer is an educator, writer, and mom. She teaches for the Wyoming Institute for Disabilities and the Department of American Cultural Studies.
In 2022, she earned her PhD in Gender Studies from Arizona State University with focuses on Disability Studies and Justice Studies. Prior to that, she earned her MA in Women's and Gender Studies at the University of South Florida. Her BA is in Sociology and LGBTQ Studies from Northeastern Illinois University in Chicago, where she was born and raised.
Dr. Peer has published pieces in Disability Studies Quarterly, the Canadian Journal
for Disability Studies, Feminist Studies, Ms. Magazine, and The Feminist Wire. Her
teaching and research interests primarily revolve around intersections of feminist-of-color
disability studies, abolition feminism, tribal sovereignty, and medical ethics. Her
dissertation explored the bureaucratic processes that allow carceral locations such
as nursing homes, hospitals, and jails to enact harm onto disabled people and evade
responsibility.
Outside of her UW duties, Dr. Peer teaches Disability and Gender Studies at other
schools all across the U.S. At home, she spends a lot of time with her three young
children and two aging (but still energetic!) dogs. In the summer, you can catch her
planning and volunteering at summer camps across the Midwest designed for people with
disabilities and complex medical needs.
