Association joins UW weed management programs for first conference

New weed invaders, chemical company updates and reclamation and revegetation weed issues are among topics for weed management professionals at the first meeting of the Wyoming Weed Management Association (WWMA) Jan 30-Feb. 1 in Casper.

The meeting, at the Parkway Plaza Hotel & Convention Centre, is in conjunction with the University of Wyoming Pesticide Applicator Recertification program and the UW Weed Management Workshop for Professionals. The WWMA, which recently formed, promotes and facilitates collaboration and education on weed management issues among all interested parties in Wyoming.

“We are excited about partnering with the WWMA for its first meeting,” said extension weed specialist Stephen Enloe, assistant professor of weed science in the College of Agriculture’s Department of Plant Sciences. “This is a great opportunity to bring together a wide range of people interested in invasive plants, including university researchers and extension specialists, ranchers, farmers, land managers, government agency personnel, and private and commercial applicators.”

The conference will fulfill recertification credits for all categories of pesticide applicators whose licenses expire Jan. 31, 2007. Others will receive 12 hours credit toward recertification.

“This conference is a great opportunity for people involved in pest control to interact with each other in finding solutions to pest management problems in Wyoming,” said Mark Ferrell, extension pesticide specialist in the Department of Plant Sciences.

Other conference highlights include basic botany and herbicide mode of action, crop weed control updates, weed control in turf and ornamental grasses, Wyoming State Weed Management Strategic Plan progress, weed management areas in Wyoming, small-acreage weed management issues and weed mapping strategies.

Registration deadline is Jan. 19. To register and for more information, call toll-free (877) 733-3618, extension 2, or (307) 766-5249. Registration fees are $60 for WWMA members and $80 for nonmembers.

Program information is also available at www.uwyo.edu/plants/wyopest/CommercialPAT/patcours.html. To become a member of WWMA, contact Keith Kennedy, treasurer, at (307) 547-3712 or agrimind@rtconnect.net
