The theme for 2006 is Livestock Production Systems. The state contest
this year will be similar to the examples provided at the 2005 Fall
clinic. Livestock production systems includes structures, energy and
power, machinery and equipment, and the combined environmental and natural
resources/industry and marketing systems. Each member of a four person
team will perform a skill in each of the following system areas:
Structural Systems: Arc Welding. (Suggested refs: Mechanics
in Agriculture)
Energy Systems: small gas engines, Briggs and Stratton
(Suggested ref: B&S Repair Instructions manual and CD resources
(Briggs and Stratton.com). Also, tractor hydraulic systems (suggested
ref: John Deere FOS Hydraulics).
Machinery Systems: feed materials handling equipment,
electric motor selection, installation, sprockets and chains, pulleys
and belts. (suggested ref. Mechanics in Agriculture)
Environment/Natural Resources Systems: planning manure
storage and disposal systems, EPA requirements and regulations (Resources:
Internet, Wyoming EPA, local NRCS personnel)
Industry and Marketing Systems: combined with ENR Systems.
Team Activity
Each team should bring a minimum of one laptop computer that contains
Word, Excel, and PowerPoint software. It is also recommended that each
team bring their own storage device, preferably a USB removable drive
for storage of their work. Also, other devices, 3.5 floppy, Zip disks,
or CDs are acceptable.
Written Test
A 100 item multiple-choice test will be included with questions from
each of the systems areas described above. The primary references for
the questions will be Phipps and Reynolds, Mechanics in Agriculture,
Briggs and Stratton Single Cylinder “L” Head Repair Manual.
Also, the old B&S manual, Service and Repair Instructions has a
chapter on “Theories of Operation” which will be included.
Other Requirements
Each team member should bring a hand-held calculator, a clipboard and
pencil or pen. Appropriate work clothing should include, industry approved
safety glasses, coveralls or shop coat, and shoes that cover the foot.
