Wyoming Nematode Survey Information

The Wyoming Nematode Survey is done in several different commodities in order to detect the presence or absence of those parasitic nematodes of concern to the state and to potential export recipients. The Wyoming Nematode Survey is accomplished through a joint effort between USDA APHIS PPQ, the Wyoming Department of Agriculture, and the Wyoming Pest Detection / CAPS Program.

The Wyoming Nematode Survey is conducted in the fall at harvest. Twenty soil core samples are taken throughout the tested field and are mixed together. A sub-sample of about 1 pint of soil is then taken and sent to the University of Nebraska Nematology Lab for analysis. The samples are screened for nematodes, and any that are found are identified to genus. Microscope and DNA identification methods are used.
