Dr. Charlie Dolan receives UW’s John P. Ellbogen Lifetime Teaching Award
UW College of Engineering & Applied Science
Professor Charlie Dolan from UW's Department of Civil &Architectural Engineering has received this year's John P. Ellbogen LifetimeTeaching Award. This prestigious UWteaching award "recognizes the long, distinguished and exemplary career of one senior faculty member who has excelled as a teacher at the University ofWyoming."
Professor Dolan excels at teaching in several ways. Students regard him very highly as a classroom teacher, and have successfully nominated him for UW Mortar Board Top Prof Awards in 1995, 2003, and 2010. His education activities have engaged students beyond his home department and college, such as in cross-disciplinary design projects.
His teaching expertise draws on his vast experience as a consulting engineer working with teams to design a broad range of concrete structures. He has coauthored a leading book on the design of concrete buildings, engaged in numerous research projects, and for many years has been a member of the country's (and arguably the world's) principal committee prescribing the design rules for concrete buildings. His textbook, Design of Concrete Structures, is in its 14th edition. Thus, a vast number of structural engineers in this country and abroad have been touched by his teaching through the use of his textbook for a class or as a reference.
In recognition of his talent for teaching and education, Professor Dolan was appointed to serve as the college's first H. T. Person Chair ofEngineering, a position focused on enhancing teaching and learning across the college's undergraduate programs. He has successfully served in this position for the past ten years. A forthcoming book by him offers useful guidance for the chair's next holder.
