Family Medicine is taught throughout the three-year program, both in the Family Medicine Center and during the three months of Family Medicine rotation in the hospital. Residents see patients in the Family Medicine Center 1 to 2 half days per week as first years, 3 half days per week as second years and 4 half days per week as third years. During the Family Medicine rotation, a team of residents provides care for the in-patient service. During this time, residents also serve as consultants for patients hospitalized by other physicians. Supervision is provided by the faculty.
Nine months of adult medicine experience is required through the three years of training. Educational experiences occur at the Cheyenne Regional Medical Center, the Veteran's Administration Medical Center and local physicians' offices. Cases range from general medical problems to critical care. Residents have the opportunity to work with sub specialists in the fields of allergy and immunology, cardiology, endocrinology, gastroenterology, hematology-oncology, nephrology, neurology and pulmonology.
Residents have four required months of obstetrical experience under the supervision of the program faculty and community physicians. Residents will gain experience in labor management and delivery including vacuum extraction, forceps and operative obstetrics. During this time, residents will also participate in gynecologic surgeries. Residents who desire advanced training have the opportunity to gain additional experience in high risk and operative obstetrics. All residents will manage prenatal patients in the Family Medicine Center and follow them through delivery and postpartum care. Additionally, one month of office gynecology is required. During this time, residents have the opportunity to become proficient in colposcopy.
Residents have four months of required pediatric experience. First-year residents spend one month in Denver, Colo., doing inpatient pediatrics. Second-year residents return to Denver for one month of neonatology/pediatric emergency room experience. Two months of additional pediatric experience occurs, one with local physicians, and the other with Denver Children's Hospital. Additional experience in neonatology occurs during the required obstetrical rotations.
Residents have two required months of general surgery plus additional rotations in ENT, orthopedics, ophthalmology and urology. All residents will become proficient in managing pre- and post-operative patients along with developing strong surgical assist skills.
