Guest Reception

--Welcome Diana Ohman--

Director of the Department of Defense Schools in Europe

University of Wyoming graduate, Diana Ohman, will be visiting College of Education classes on Tuesday September 28th.

Diana is the Director of the Department of Defense Schools in Europe, she served as the Superintendent of Laramie County School District #1 in Cheyenne, WY, she was State Superintendent of Public Instruction, and Wyoming’s Secretary of State.

The SWEA (Student Wyoming Education Association) will be sponsoring a reception for Director Ohman from 4:00-4:50 pm in ED 315.

Diana will make some remarks about international teaching careers, and civilian positions for educators within the Department of Defense.

Following the reception at approximately 5:00 pm, SWEA will be holding their first meeting of the Fall semester. 

All College of Education students interested in joining are welcome to attend.

Biography:

Diana Ohman, the Director of the Department of Defense Schools in Europe, began her duties in August of 1999.

She served as the Superintendent of Laramie County School District #1 in Cheyenne, Wyoming where she supervised 13,000 students, 1,800 educators and support staff and administered a $80 million budget.

Between 1995-1999, Ms. Ohman served as Wyoming’s Secretary of State.  Within that capacity, she served as the de facto Lieutenant Governor, Securities Commissioner, State Elections Officer, and Corporations Administrator.  Additionally, she was responsible for storage of all legislative enactments and journals.  She also served on five state boards and commissions during this period

Prior to running for Secretary of State, Ohman served one term as Wyoming’s State Superintendent of Public Instruction.  In this capacity she supervised 49 school districts, including 100,000 students, 7,000 teachers, 6,500 support staff, and a $245 million budget.  During this time she also was an ex officio member of the University of Wyoming Board of Trustees, the Wyoming Community College Commission, and the Wyoming State Board of Education

Before becoming an elected official, Ohman spent 19 years as a teacher, elementary school principal, and special education director in several school districts around Wyoming.  She was also the director of a migrant students’ summer school program for three years.

Ms. Diana Ohman has a bachelor’s degree in elementary education and a master’s degree in educational administration from the University of Wyoming.

In 1990, she was honored by being named Wyoming Elementary Principal of the Year.  In 1984, Ms. Ohman was the Campbell County Professional Business Woman of the Year and in 1980, she was named Campbell County Teacher of the Year.  In addition to these honors she is most proud of her involvement in State level United Way Campaigns, Chamber of Commerce and Rotary Club work and her association with members of the leadership at F. E. Warren Air Force Base in Cheyenne, Wyoming.

Ohman is married to Gary Stover, an administrator with City Colleges of Chicago.
