Teacher Fair draws 68 schools

Perspective elementary and high school teachers from UW had the opportunity to be interviewed by administrators from 68 school districts Tuesday at the 2004 Teacher Fair.

Students had 30 minute interviews with district recruiters to learn about potential positions, and, in some cases, secure employment with offered contracts, said Internship Coordinator Tammy Browning from the Center for Advising and Career Services.

She said students signed up for interviews Monday night after they met with representatives from the districts.

Most students are active in a student teaching program from the Education Department and anticipate graduating this May. However, Browning said students not participating in the education program can still meet with potential employers and discuss alternative meaning of acquiring qualifications such as a teaching certificate.

The majority of schools that attended the fair are based in Wyoming and Colorado, but several representatives from other states traveled far to attend the fair. This was the fourth year Bernie Tingle, a district recruiter for the Bering Strait School District in Alaska, came to UW.

"We like to hire from rural communities because the Bering Strait School is in a "bush" community in that the area is only accessible by plane,” Tingle said. “We find that people from Wyoming are good candidates because they, too, are well adept to the cold and used to remote areas."

Tingle said she and other administrators were impressed by not only the high number of students attending the fair but also by the high caliber of students.

Elementary Principal Gloria Mitchell from Byers School District in Colorado said she thought the event was well organized and produced more candidates than she had expected.

The Teacher Fair is an annual event that has come to UW for the past 12 years.
