Admission Requirements for a Regular Master of Science

4 year Bachelor's Degree or equivalent

Electrical engineering or similar degree in another branch of engineering or in a related field, provided that the student completes prerequisite courses without graduate credit as defined by the student's graduate committee.

GPA

3.0 GPA (A = 4.0) or equivalent in an ABET accredited bachelor's program (or international equivalent).

GRE

TOEFL

A minimum total of 550 (79 iBT) is required for students for whom English is not the native language. The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering recommends that any international student seeking financial support take the TSE.

Quick Start Masters Program - BS/MS:

The combined BS/MS program in Electrical and Computer Engineering enables especially well-qualified students to be admitted to the MS program during the junior year, allowing a simultaneous pursuit of the BS and MS degrees. BS/MS students may have up to six credit hours count toward both the undergraduate and graduate requirements to reduce the period of study.

Admission to the Program

BS/MS program application eligibility begins in the student's junior year. Minimum requirements for admission are:

  1. completion of the five core EE courses (see list below),
  2. a minimum GPA of 3.8 in ECE department courses, and
  3. three letters of recommendation (at least two must be from ECE faculty at UW).

Transfer students must have taken at least two of the core EE courses at UW. Transfer credit for the remaining three core EE courses must be approved. Transfer students must have completed at least 15 credit hours of courses at UW in order to qualify for admission.

BS/MS Student Status

A BS/MS student with fewer than 132 credit hours is considered an undergraduate, subject to the department undergraduate regulations and not eligible to be a graduate assistant.

Overlapping Credit

A maximum of 6 credit hours of ECE courses at the 4000 or 5000 level may be counted toward both the undergraduate and MS degree requirements, subject to the approval of the student's advisor and the ECE Graduate Coordinator.

Advising

A BS/MS student must secure a faculty advisor and submit a plan of study by advising week of his/her first semester in the program. A committee will be put together at the same time.

EE Core Courses

  • EE 2220 Circuits & Signals
  • EE 3220 Signals & Systems
  • EE 3310 Intro to Electronics
  • EE 2390 Digital Systems
  • EE 3150 Electromagnetics
