4 year Bachelor's Degree or equivalent |
Electrical Engineering or similar degree in another branch of engineering or in a related field, provided that the student completes prerequisite courses without graduate credit as defined by the student's graduate committee. |
GPA |
3.0 GPA (A = 4.0) or equivalent in an ABET accredited bachelor's program. |
GRE |
Students must achieve a score in the 45th percentile on the GRE Verbal examination, the 65th percentile on the GRE Quantitative examination. |
TOEFL |
A minimum total of 550 (79 iBT) is required for students for whom English is not the native language. The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering recommends that any international student seeking financial support take the TSE. |
Exceptional Admission (without review of faculty as a whole)
Master of Science Degree |
Must have 9 or fewer formal course hours remaining in completion of M.S. study. |
GPA |
Minimum graduate GPA of 3.8. |
5000 Level Course Requirement |
Must have completed with a minimum of a B earned in each class. |
Endorsement |
Letter of endorsement by the proposed Ph.D. sponsoring faculty member, which is independent of any possible monetary support. |
Evaluation |
Affirmative evaluation from two people, one of which has to be the MS thesis advisor and the other having to be an ECE faculty member who has had the student in class (4/5000 level). Written comments justifying evaluation are required. |
Research |
Plan A M.S.: Demonstrated research maturity by reporting a scheduled or confirmed date of defense or seminar. Plan B M.S.: endorsement of student's research potential by M.S. advisor. |
Normal Admission

Undergraduate students who have been working with a faculty from the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department, University of Wyoming with an exceptional academic record are eligible to apply for direct PhD program. The admission process involves a review by the full department faculty. Please note, direct PhD admissions are only for students with an undergraduate degree from a U.S. institution.
Admission of non-ECE MS students, and other cases not covered above: case by case basis, decided by a vote of the full department faculty.
