BBB Torch Awards

Since 2004 students at the University of Wyoming have nominated companies that they believe have exemplary management practices, high standards in customer relations, honesty, and integrity in marketing and advertising. Since then 13 Wyoming companies have received the Mountain States Better Business Bureau Torch Award for Marketplace Ethics.

Students identify and research companies in order to nominate them for the BBB awards. Students meet with company employees, and owners and conduct multi-level analysis of the company's ethics policies and values. Companies that receive the award are honored at a banquet in Fort Collins.

If you know a Wyoming company that has high ethical standards and would like to nominate them for the Mountain States BBB Torch Awards please e-mail us.

Five Wyo firms up for BBB ethics award
By Wyoma Groenenberg

Five Wyoming companies are among the 12 finalists for the Colorado-Wyoming Better Business Bureau Torch Awards for Business Ethics. Winners will be announced at the annual awards dinner scheduled April 21 in Loveland, Colo.

The award recognizes businesses that exhibit exemplary business ethics, uphold high standards in relationships with customers, suppliers and shareholders, show honesty and integrity in marketing and advertising, and give back to their communities.

Twenty-two companies were nominated for the 2011 awards by peers, colleagues and customers. Business students from the University of Northern Colorado, Colorado State University and the University of Wyoming prepared written entries, which were then judged by an independent panel.

In the 1-10 employees category, Niemann & Sons Music in Cheyenne, owned by David Niemann, has been nominated. For more than 20 years, Niemann & Sons has offered instruments - digital and traditional pianos, organs, orchestral and band - to all levels of musicians. The company also provides sound reinforcement equipment. The other finalist is the Colorado Boat Center of Johnstown.

Handel Information Technologies Inc. in Laramie, owned by Even Brande, is a finalist in the 11-25 employees category. Handel specializes in creating the software solutions for human services agencies in more than 30 states, ranging from small nonprofits to major state programs. The other finalists are HighCraft Builders Inc. and the Brendle Group, both of Fort Collins.

The Sheridan business of Kennon Products Inc., owned by Ron Kensey, is a finalist for the 26-99 employees category. The company sells such items as aircraft covers, mouse-resistant wellhead covers, grafitti-proof signage and stickers, a suicide prevention door and various other products. The company has gross sales of $2 million annually. The other finalists are Alliance Construction Solutions of Loveland, Colo., and Drahota and Palmer Flowers, both in Fort Collins.

For the 100-plus employees category, L&H Industrial Inc. of Gillette and Trihydro Corp. of Laramie are finalists along with Walker Manufacturing of Fort Collins, Colo. L&H, owned by Mike Wandler, rebuilds heavy mining equipment and also engineers, designs and manufactures alternative replacement parts for the surface mining industry. Trihydro provides environmental consulting, engineering and surveying, air quality and process management, information technology, sustainable business solutions, and water and natural resource services to public and private clients.
