GEAR UP Wyoming Scholarships

 

Federal GEAR UP Opportunity Scholarship (Due June 1st)

The GEAR UP Opportunity Scholarship is for students served under the 2017 GEAR UP Grant. It is $800 per academic year and can be used at the post-secondary institution of your choice (institutions must be eligible to receive federal financial aid and accredited).

Requirements:

  • You must be eligible to receive federal financial aid
  • You must be under the age of 22 years old when you are first awarded the GU Opportunity Scholarship
  • You must have received your high school diploma or equivalent
  • The school or university you are attending must be eligible to receive federal financial aid (have a federal school code) AND is an accredited post-secondary education institution in the Department of Education’s accreditation database (https://ope.ed.gov/accreditation/)
  • You must participate in GEAR UP services, offered under the 2017 GU grant.

Institutional Scholarships - For GEAR UP students attending UW

The University of Wyoming (UW) sets aside $150,000 each year to aid former GEAR UP Wyoming students in their pursuit of a bachelor's degree at UW. The UW GEAR UP Institutional Scholarship criteria include specific requirements and are awarded to students who have demonstrated regular participation in the GEAR UP program. Eligibility requirements will be verified by each applicant's host GEAR UP site.

The UW GEAR UP (GU) Institutional Scholarship application is open from October 1 – April 1. New awards are made ever fall semester. Additional awards may be made in the spring semester on a funding available basis, and will be made using the applicant list from the previous fall.

*Please note that the spring semester application cycle has been eliminated. The final application cycle is open now and will close on November 1, 2018.

Please follow the steps below to apply for the UW GEAR UP Institutional Scholarship.

  1. Apply for admission to the University of Wyoming.
  2. Complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) by January 15. Complete the FAFSA verification process by April 1.
  3. Complete the UW GEAR UP Institutional Scholarship Application.
  4. Watch your email for messages concerning your aid and make sure you file the proper paperwork, when requested, before any deadlines pass.

Students only need to apply for the scholarship once. There is no need to reapply each year; however, there are continued eligibility requirements that are reviewed each semester.

Continued Eligibility Requirements:

  • File your FAFSA by April 1 each year. Priority will be given to FAFSA applications completed by March 1 each year. Any verification requirements must be completed by June 1.
  • Maintain continuous enrollment (fall/spring)
  • Maintain good academic standing as defined by your institution
  • Maintain satisfactory academic progress as defined by your institution
  • Complete a bachelor’s degree within 6 years (maximum 12 full/part-time semesters)
  • Maintain current contact/mailing and current attending institution information with the GEAR UP Wyoming office

Wyoming Community College Institutional Scholarships

 

These scholarships are awarded to former GEAR UP Wyoming students who are attending Wyoming community colleges. Most community college partner institutions have funds they award specifically to former GEAR UP Wyoming students. Scholarship eligibility criteria are determined by the individual community college.

Hathaway Scholarships

The Hathaway Scholarship program provides merit- and need-based awards to eligible students. GEAR UP works with students to prepare and encourage them to meet the criteria set by the Hathaway program.

Daniels Fund Scholarship

GEAR UP Wyoming helps students apply for the prestigious Daniels Fund Scholarship. Daniels Fund Scholarships are awarded in the spring to graduating high school seniors and are supplemental after other federal, state, institutional, and private financial aid and scholarships.

Students may use their scholarship at any two- or four-year accredited, nonprofit college or university in the United States with an intention to complete a bachelor's degree.
