HOW DO I JOIN THE UNIVERSITY GREEK COMMUNITY?

Becoming a member of a Fraternity or Sorority chapter at the University of Wyoming is a three step process. First, you must find interest (which, hopefully, you have already or will gain from reviewing this site). Second, you must investigate your options. Then, once you have reviewed the chapters that you are interested in, you can seek membership.

Interest alone is a large barrier for most, and it is the crucial link that defines those who end up becoming Greek members from those who don't. Negative stereotypes have long painted a less than desirable picture of the Greek Community as a whole, but this image is naive at best.

In truth, if everyone knew the advantages of becoming a Greek, NO ONE would want to be left out. If you have a desire to make great things happen in your life, Greek is where you want to be.

Once you have developed that interest, the investigation period begins. Either by researching individual chapters online (though the resources we've given you here), or by personally visiting chapters through Formal Recruitment or otherwise, you will want to see what each of the chapters can offer you, and where you will find the best fit before you make any decisions. Some chapters will be right for you, many will be wrong, but only one will be your ideal home.

Finally, you will seek membership in the chapter that you find best suited to your individual needs and desires.

Formal Greek Recruitment is by far the best and most broad opportunity to interact with houses in the Greek Community at UW, and it will give you the best chance to truly understand what Greek can offer you, and where you would fit in best. During Formal Recruitment, invitations for membership are offered by all interested chapters at the end of the recruitment week. Of these, you can then choose which "bid" to accept, based on what you have seen during the previous week, and ultimately decide where you will become a member.

If you are steering clear of formal recruitment, though regrettable, you can visit chapters on your own, or with the guidance of other Greek students you will undoubtedly connect with on campus. By attending social events, philanthropic events, or just sitting around and talking with members, you can learn much, and open doors for yourself within individual chapters. It is important however, to make sure you are making the right decision by looking at all of the options before you finally choose which chapter is right for you. A bad fit can ultimately ruin your opportunity to enjoy your membership, and can even drive you away from the Greek Community completely - be careful this doesn't happen to you.

The next section will tell you more about what the Greek Community is looking for when new members are selected. With this "heads up," you should be able to see what strengths you have, and what you should improve if you are truly interested in going Greek.
