Academic Programs

The department offers both undergraduate and graduate degrees.

Recruiting Statement

The Department of Mathematics and Statistics at the University of Wyoming seeks students who wish to pursue undergraduate and graduate degrees in Mathematics or Statistics. The department offers a vibrant and stimulating environment in which to learn higher mathematics and statistics and to pursue open questions at the frontiers of knowledge. With 25 faculty members and 7 lecturers, the department is large enough to offer broad expertise in pure and applied mathematics and statistics, but small enough to enjoy close working relationships between professors and students. We recruit new students from around the world, and we especially welcome applicants from underrepresented groups, including women.

The department is housed on UW’s main campus, in Laramie, Wyoming. Perched in a scenic valley at 7200 feet above sea level, between two ranges of the Rocky Mountains, Laramie offers outstanding access to outdoor recreation. The city also serves as a hub for cultural activities, including several concert series, theatre and dance performances, an art museum, nationally recognized archives, a splendid dinosaur collection, and world class scientific collections.

UW is a partner, with the National Center for Atmospheric Research, in operating the NCAR-Wyoming Supercomputer Center, which houses a world class supercomputer available to UW researchers. The university also maintains a separate Advanced Research Computing Center and the School of Energy Resources' Shell 3D Visualization Center.

The department supports roughly 25 graduate students through teaching and research assistantships that carry full tuition support, stipends, and health insurance. In addition, the University of Wyoming offers graduate assistantships that are intended to increase access and opportunities to graduate education for U.S. students from underrepresented and underserved populations and to increase student diversity in our graduate degree programs on a competitive basis.

The University of Wyoming is an affirmative action/equal opportunity employer and institution and does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, religion, sex, national origin, disability, age, veteran status, sexual orientation, or political belief in any aspect of employment or services.
