Field Trip -- Fall '03 (continued)

"The Church of Fermentology," where the yeast interacts with the beer to create alcohol
At 4:00 p.m. we were scheduled to take a guided tour of the New Belgium Brewery. Our guide Dave was very informative about the processing of the barley to create different flavors and aromas in their beer, and about the fermentation process in general. The New Belgium Brewery is only 12 years old, yet it already boasts widespread fame as being among the top breweries in the United States, both in distribution (although only distributed throughout 14 states) and taste of the product. Furthermore, the brewery uses Wyoming wind power to fire its kilns, so to speak, and has invested heavily into renewable and energy-efficient heating processes.
Of course, when one visits the brewery, especially one like New Belgium, one must also indulge in some samples of the products. Many of us tasted a smattering of eight beers, including two limited samples - Frambozen and Transatlantique.

Look at all the pretty colors! Here are some of the
beers that we sampled.
We watched the the lunar eclipse for a few minutes following the tour. Then, it was back to Laramie.
