The Division of Social Work at the University of Wyoming, in the School of Health and Human Services and the College of Health Sciences, offers a Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) degree program fully accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE). Coursework toward the 122-hour degree (excluding physical education and ROTC credits). The Division of Social Work prepares students to be generalist social work practitioners and to work with individuals, groups, families, organizations, communities, and institutions to achieve more effective and efficient functioning. The degree is available on the Laramie and UW/CC campuses. Coursework is offered face-to-face, via compressed video, and on-line (as part of a face-to-face or compressed video course).

The curriculum is designed to help students acquire important knowledge and skills in the areas of values and ethics, diversity, social and economic justice, populations-at-risk, human behavior and the social environment, social welfare policy and services, social work practice, and research. Students select elective courses in areas such as child welfare, aging, substance abuse, corrections, child and adolescent services, mental health, and disability services. The program culminates in a 450-hour supervised field practicum; it allows students to work as social workers in one of Wyoming’s many human service agencies.

BSW Program Mission statement and objectives.

The BSW program prepares beginning level, generalist, professional social workers for practice in a rural, sparsely populated region. Program objectives are:

  • Prepare BSW students for entry-level generalist social work practice with diverse populations in Wyoming and elsewhere;
  • Prepare BSW students for entry into graduate school;
  • Contribute to the liberal arts and sciences tradition of the university by: a) providing course work to majors as well as other university students which deals with human needs, services, values and issues; and, b) integrating the social work content with a broad, liberal arts perspective required of all social work majors;
  • Foster a commitment to social work values, an appreciation for human diversity, and a commitment to social advocacy and the elimination of discrimination and social and economic injustice;
  • Participate in the expansion and extension of the knowledge of entry level generalist social work practice through participation in professional associations, conducting research, and communicating with other professionals through publications;
  • Provide content about the social contexts of social work practice, the changing nature of those contexts, the behavior of organizations, and the dynamics of change;
  • Infuse throughout the curriculum the values and ethics that guide professional social workers in their practice;
  • Prepare graduates who are aware of their responsibility to continue their professional growth and development; and
  • Contribute to the advancement of social welfare in the State of Wyoming by actively participating in and providing leadership for organizations and campaigns designed to reduce or eliminate poverty, racism, sexism, and all other social injustices which deny human dignity and opportunity.
