Undergraduates–Bachelor of Arts Program

Undergraduate major in sociology
Sociology majors are required to take 10 sociology courses and one statistics course (usually taught by a sociologist). Among these courses will be an introductory survey of the fields of sociology, a course in research methods, and two theory courses. A senior seminar is recommended. Whatever your interests and plans, a sociology degree prepares you to better understand yourself and the social world around you.

Undergraduate minor in sociology
Students may elect to complete a minor in sociology-a strong complement to many other disciplines. The undergraduate minor requires 18 hours of course work, including SOC 1000, SOC/STAT 2070, and SOC 3700; nine hours of sociology electives must include six hours of courses numbered 3000 and above.

Student Organizations and Honors in Sociology
Two organizations provide activities for undergraduate and graduate students in the UW Department of Sociology. The Organization of Active Students Interested in Sociology (OASIS) holds monthly meetings, organizes brownbag talks, plans film series, participates in resource fairs, and other activities.

A second organization is the Kappa Chapter of Alpha Kappa Delta, the national honor society for sociologists. Each spring semester, students who maintain a grade point average of 3.4 and above are eligible for induction into this association. The induction service includes a dinner, guest speaker, and the presentation of honors such as Phi Beta Kappa and Alpha Kappa Delta memberships awarded to our students.
