Summit 09, the University of Wyoming’s Freshman Transition Program, is a weekend program designed especially for you. Each activity offers important information and experiences that will give you a leg up as you begin college. Scheduled Thursday through Saturday, Summit events will allow you to connect with teachers, interact with experienced students, engage with dynamic presentations—and kick off your college adventure!

Thursday, August 20

7:00am

Move-in Day

Thursday, August 20 is designated as Freshman Move-in Day at the Residence Halls. Parents are invited to participate in Freshmen Move-in Day activities.

1:00pm-3:00pm

Cowboy Parents, Reception

Parents and families can drop-in for refreshments at the Fireplace Lounge in the lower level of Washakie Center where they can enjoy conversation with Cowboy Parent Council members and UW administrators and learn more about campus resources available to them.

3:30pm-6:30pm

Welcome to Wyoming Dinner

Students and families are all invited to the complimentary Welcome to Wyoming Dinner at Washakie Dining Center to get a taste of what Wyoming is all about!

6:30pm

Meet Your Peer Mentor on Fraternity Mall

Your group name and a map of Fraternity Mall can be found in your Summit Pack.

7:00pm-8:30pm

President's Welcome Address and Reception

Thursday evening culminates with President Buchanan’s Welcome Address to the incoming class of 2009. This important event, attended by students and families, UW faculty, and Summit student leaders, celebrates and welcomes new students to the UW community. The Welcome Address will be held in Arena Auditorium, with a reception in the Field House immediately following.
Parents, this is your final event during Summit. Travel safely and rest assured that your students are in good hands at UW.

Neighborhood Night Games

Choose to participate in a wide variety of fun & games like volleyball, swing dance, obstacle course, slack line, mechanical bull, karoke, kickball, board games, basketball, or an ice cream social.

Meet Your Peer Mentor On Fraternity Mall

9:00am-10:00am

Keynote Speaker

All students will meet in the Arts & Sciences Auditorium to hear a presentation by Troy Stende, our Keynote Speaker for the Summit 2009 program. Troy is the premier Student Leader Trainer on the college circuit and is a three-time recipient of the prestigious “Best Campus Speaker” award from Association for the Promotion of Campus Activities (APCA). Troy has addressed thousands of students/staff/faculty in 43 states and around the world. With his wife, he co-authored College Success Secrets: What They Don’t Teach You in the Classroom. Troy has also appeared on National Public Radio, and was featured in USA Today for living his dream job. His program will help you get better grades, accomplish life-long goals, feel a sense of peace/happiness, increase confidence, and create more meaningful relationships with family/friends, just to name a few.

Student Theatre

Produced by UW’s nationally renowned theater program, student actors will give a theater performance designed to introduce incoming students to UW’s culture, quirks, and life skills in and outside the classroom.

11:00am-1:00pm

Picnic on Prexy’s

The Washakie Dining Center will be closed in order to serve one of the largest picnics Prexy’s pasture has ever seen! This picnic will be our first ever "zero-waste" event, at which the goal is to have all food and paper waste composted or recycled.

1:00pm-2:00pm

StrengthsQuest Session

Using the individual StrengthsQuest profile you completed online before you arrived, Summit peer leaders will direct this time to help you interpret, share, and plan for the semester based on your personal strengths. This session will help you better understand your social and academic potential and gain strategies for applying your personal strengths to college challenges.

2:15pm-3:30pm

Faculty “sneak peak” session

Led by UW’s top faculty, this session probes into diversity and controversy in college courses, as well as providing inside information about professors’ experiences with students and best tips for succeeding.

9:00pm

Casino Night (Optional)

Kick off the 2009 Friday Night Fever Series with the annual Casino Night in the Wyoming Union! Enjoy free billiards, slot machines, cash cube, black jack, craps, roulette, and more. Prizes are available to participating UW students.

Saturday, August 22

 

Activity

Your Peer Mentor will direct you to your designated activity and start time. These activities are designed to help students interact with campus and learn about the broader goals of a college experience and include outdoor and athletic pursuits, scavenger hunts on campus, a “Read In” at the library, and service activities benefitting local and international communities. You choose your activity when you register for Summit 09 online. (If you are participating in a Freshman Interest Group or other learning community, you may have scheduled activities for this time with your cohort peers and instructors).

Movie on the Lawn (Optional)

Join your friends on the Washakie Green for a slideshow of pictures from the weekend’s events followed by Walt Disney's "Up," sponsored by the Residence Halls Association.
