The William Robertson Coe Library and School of American Studies represent a substantial contribution of private funds to public higher education in Wyoming. The building was completed in 1958 and dedicated to the promotion of American ideals and free enterprise according to the wishes of benefactor William Robertson Coe. More than 100,000-square feet, the building houses the library, archival facilities and School of American Studies (now located in the Cooper House). An east wing was added in 1979, nearly doubling the shelf space for the library.
Architects Porter and Bradley of Cheyenne and Hitchcock and Hitchcock of Laramie collaborated to design a building with low ceilings, easily accessible stacks, and interspersed reading areas. Located at the center of the campus, the building has a contemporary style which emphasizes a blend of metal and stone materials. There are elements of both traditional Beaux Arts and modernist experimentation. The east wing, designed by Kellogg and Kellogg of Cheyenne and Rock Springs, emphasizes the use of natural light that is a hallmark of modern architecture.
