STUDENT HEALTH SERVICE
AND COLLEGE OF NURSING BUILDING
The Student Health Service and the College of Nursing Building was designed by Sam C. Hutchings, Cheyenne architect. Construction in 1960 was prompted by the need for adequate space for both the College of Nursing and Student Health Service.
The need for a Student Health Service was established in 1928 by President Arthur Griswold Crane, and an office was opened in the Half Acre Gymnasium. At that time, a one dollar fee was assessed students for financial support. A nurse was the single staff person, and it was not until 1939 that a campus physician was appointed. In 1950 the Student Health Service offices were moved to the Wyoming Union. By 1957 when 19,000 visits were recorded, it was apparent that the health service needed new quarters.
The Division of Nursing was established in the College of Liberal Arts in 1951. In 1957, nursing was moved from the College of Liberal Arts to become a new college. The establishment of the College of Nursing and the space problems of Student Health Service provided the impetus of the funding of a new building.
The brick and stone building that houses these two campus units was completed in 1961. It expresses the same feeling of linearity that other buildings of this period on campus possess. The contemporary design of this building blends with the other, earlier campus building s as a result of the architect's careful choice of building materials and use of proportion. the arch over front entrance reflects historical architectural elements with stepped voussoirs and keystones in the low rise. Quoins flank and decorate this entrance with the merest suggestion of a crenellation at the top of the facade.
