UW Registration Under Way for Race for the Cure

June 20, 2010

University of Wyoming employees are urged to join TEAM UW "Buckin' for the Cure' at the Race for the Cure Saturday, Aug. 14, in Cheyenne. Registration is urged before July 29.

The Race for the Cure benefits the Susan G. Komen for the Cure, an organization supporting breast cancer research. Since its inception in 1982, the organization has raised more than $1.5 billion for research, education and health services, making it the largest breast cancer charity in the world.

This year UW President Tom Buchanan and Jacque Buchanan are serving as honorary chairs of the 210 Komen Wyoming Race for the Cure.

"We hope we will have a huge turnout of UW folks to support this wonderful event that touches the lives of so many," President Buchanan says.

Jo Chytka, UW Center for Advising and Career Services director, and Wilma Varga, assistant to the provost, are organizing UW's team effort.

UW employees can register online at http://race.komenwyoming.org and following the directions to sign up for TEAM UW. Cost is $22 per person.

When registering, persons are urged to include t-shirt size. TEAM UW t-shirts can be picked up Aug. 11-12 from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. both days.

"Seventy-five percent of the dollars we raise will fund vital services across our local service area, and 25 percent will be combined with other affiliates' funds to fuel breast cancer research," Buchanan says. "So, we will be helping save lives in our community immediately, while we support the efforts to find a cure."

As of Monday, TEAM UW was leading in fund-raising efforts.
