UW Hockey Club Earns Two Victories

February 10, 2011

The University of Wyoming hockey club won a pair of road games last weekend against Colorado College to close out the 2010-11 regular season.

Jake Bates (Jackson) and Matt Schulz (Casper) scored two goals apiece in the Cowboys' 6-3 victory in the series opener at Honnen Arena in Colorado Springs, Colo. In the second game, Schulz and Mitch Mayfield (Powell) each netted a pair of goals in UW's 5-4 triumph over the Tigers.

The Cowboys (10-11-1) will find out Friday if they qualify for the American Collegiate Hockey Association (ACHA) Division III Pacific Regional Tournament, Feb. 18-19 in Colorado Springs.

Dan Lang (Casper), T.J. Peters (Jackson) and Billy Ross (Boulder, Colo.) also scored goals for UW in the weekend series against Colorado College.

Schulz, Dustin Galbreath (Greenwich, Conn.) and Mitch Nelson (Sheridan) all recorded two assists. Bates, Ross and Jim Fried (Kirkwood, Mo.) each had one assist.

Despite a spectacular rookie season from Schulz, who has netted 37 goals to rank among the ACHA leaders, the Cowboys' chances of returning to the national championship tournament appear slim. The top 10 teams in the Pacific Region will advance to the regional tourney; UW was No. 12 in the last rankings.

The top four teams in each of the ACHA's four regions will go to nationals, March 9-12 in Holland, Mich.
