Campus Construction Update for June 30

June 28, 2013

These are among the construction activities scheduled June 30-July 13 at the University of Wyoming:

Road Closure -- 22nd Street, between Grand Avenue and Arrowhead Drive, will remain closed through the end of July and, possibly, through mid-August, to connect to utilities in the street for the Marian H. Rochelle Gateway Center construction project.

One-lane traffic at 22nd and Willett streets -- Asphalt patching will begin at the corners of 22nd Street and Willett Drive, and the entrance at 20th Street and Willett Drive (entrance between Arena-Auditorium and Rochelle Athletic Center). Traffic will be restricted to one lane in each direction. Concrete work will be ongoing at the Arena-Auditorium ticket office entrance and exit. The travel lane will remain closed for construction of ADA parking. Be aware of equipment and crews in these areas.

Grand Avenue Patching -- The Wyoming Department of Transportation is patching Grand Avenue in Laramie. Initially, crews will be in various locations between Fourth and 15th streets, and repairing the surface as needed. The work will be conducted during daylight hours and motorists are urged to watch for flaggers and workers. When the patching is completed, the project will move east between Boulder Drive and the I-80 on- and off-ramps. This will be a more extensive rehabilitation, including a mill and overlay. Travelers should allow themselves a little extra time to reach their destinations as single-lane closures in the work zones may be in effect and speeds lowered.

Access to area businesses will remain throughout the entire length of both project areas, although side street parking may be occasionally required. If necessary, work will be suspended during Jubilee Days. The contractor is Simon of Cheyenne. The project is paid for by federal funds.

The UW Facilities Planning Office reports the following activities for the week:

Agriculture building A, B & D -- (on Lewis between 12th and 13th streets) will be deconstructed this summer/fall. Asbestos abatement will start on Ag BD July 8. Parking areas between Ag A and BD, and north of Ag A, will be used for staging for the abatement contractor. Access to the alley -- along the north side of the Agriculture building -- will remain open.

Marian H. Rochelle Gateway Center (22nd and Grand, scheduled completion fall 2014) -- Additional project information is available here. Site excavation and site utility work, and concrete foundation work, is under way. The concrete walls for the elevators and stairs topped out at 62 feet above the first floor. The installation of the structural concrete walls will continue for several more days. Underground utility work is under way. Many of the main electrical conduits, air ducts and plumbing drain lines are in place. This work will continue during the next several days.

Biological Sciences Building Mechanical Modifications (Scheduled completion mid-August) -- Staging is established on the south side of the building (with no pedestrian access) and part of the Ivinson parking area. Traffic will be rerouted along the east side of Biological Sciences. Interior work on compressed labs will continue. Curbs for the mechanical units will be installed the week of July 2.

Enzi STEM Facility (Lewis Street between 10th and 11th streets, scheduled completion June 2015) -- Asphalt was installed this week. There will be no activity until the project is started, sometime in late August.

Half Acre Gymnasium Addition and Renovation (Scheduled completion spring 2015) -- Full project information is available at www.uwyo.edu/ha-renovation. Half Acre Gymnasium remains open and accessible via the west entrance. Construction work for Phase I, consisting of the demolition and reconstruction of the east portion of the existing building, continues this week with abatement and deconstruction work under way. Construction and staging areas north, south and east of the existing building have been established and are closed to all vehicular and pedestrian traffic, except that which is construction related. As required by on-going deconstruction and abatement-related tasks, access to Prexy’s Pasture from the east Wyoming Union parking lot is temporarily closed. Please use alternate routes through the Wyoming Union or between the Union and Coe Library. Temporary staging/construction areas also may be established with limited notice near the west entrance and along the pedestrian pathways north of Half Acre Gymnasium between Prexy’s Pasture and Willett Drive as required by the ongoing construction-related tasks. The day-lot parking area and roadway immediately east of Half Acre Gymnasium is closed. Temporary day-use parking will be established in the lot east of the Wyoming Union, which may require limited closing of portions of that lot. Temporary day-use parking will open approximately July 1. Significant deconstruction activities include site demolition and removal of existing improvements and landscaping necessary to make way for new construction. Please use caution in the vicinity of Half Acre Gymnasium.

Buchanan Center for the Performing Arts (Fine Arts Building, renovation and expansion, scheduled completion December 2014) -- Additional project information is available here. The parking lot on the east side of the UW Performing Arts Center is closed, and is being used for construction staging and will be converted into a green area following construction. Building visitors should use the parking lot on the north side of the building. Those entering the Performing Arts Center must now enter through the doors on the west side of the building. This will be the entrance for all building operations, including classes, ticket purchases and performances, until construction is complete. The east side of the Fine Arts Building is a secured construction zone with restricted access. The excavation earthwork is complete. Drilling and concrete pouring of piers will continue over the next several weeks. Underground utility work is complete for this phase of work. Heavy truck traffic will be frequent near War Memorial Fieldhouse, 22nd Street and Willett Drive.

White Hall Renovations -- New installations are complete on the basement through first floors. Punch-list items are being completed on all floors. Re-roofing activities continue. The new east entry is complete. Fencing is placed around the area. The west parking lot will be closed until the end of July.

ESCo Project (Energy Services Company) -- Long Energy Services Co. employees and contractors will continue to work on lighting retrofits in the Engineering and Agriculture buildings, which will impact building occupants. Workers will wear identifying badges. Work on the Wyoming State Veterinary Laboratory boiler replacement has begun with contractor staging on the west side of the building.

Wainwright/Willett Bungalows (Future parking lot) -- Abatement has begun and will be complete this week. Deconstruction will follow. Parking lot design is 90 percent complete.

Education Annex Canopy (Scheduled completion August 2013) -- Construction activities continue on the project, including foundation placement, reconstruction of sidewalks and the erection of structural steel canopy framing. Vehicular access and parking availability in the lot north of the Education Building will be severely limited throughout the remainder of construction, and will be subject to frequent revision as construction activities dictate. During construction, pedestrian access to the north entrance of the Education Building and the east entrance of the Education Annex will be maintained via designated pathways. However, accessible access to the Education Building is limited to the south entrance only. Pedestrians and motorists should exercise caution in the area.

Education Annex -- Literacy Research Center and Clinic (lower floor, Education Annex; scheduled completion January 2014) -- The lower (first) floor of the Education Annex is closed for construction. Access to the alleyway and portions of related parking east and south of the Agriculture Building is closed, and a temporary access/egress detour has been established west of the Agriculture Building. The pedestrian sidewalk in the Education Annex vicinity is closed on the south side of Lewis Street, with pedestrian access rerouted to the north side of the street at the established construction limits. Parking in the vicinity is closed on the south side of Lewis Street at the construction limits. Project activities include interior framing and rough-in, as well as foundation and site work related to the exterior building addition, and improvements in the former alleyway. Please observe all posted traffic control and construction signage.

University of Wyoming/Casper College Student Union (UW/CC Student Union, scheduled completion November 2013) -- The primary building enclosure is complete, allowing interior construction activities to proceed on or ahead of schedule. Interior finish construction is progressing throughout UW/CC third- and fourth-floor spaces. Overall project construction is approximately 87 percent complete.
