The University of Wyoming Wind Symphony will present its spring concert, “Postcards,” Saturday, April 30.

The concert will take place at 7:30 p.m. in the Buchanan Center for the Performing Arts concert hall. Robert Belser, a professor in the UW Department of Music, will conduct.

Tickets are $12 for the public; $8 for senior citizens; $6 for students not attending UW; and free to UW students with a “W” number. To purchase tickets, visit the Performing Arts box office, call (307) 766-6666 or go online at www.uwyo.edu/finearts.

The concert program will feature musical “postcards” that reflect one’s experiences of traveling and dreams of travel. The ensemble invites audience members to envision their own getaways as the music takes them to Hungary, Mexico and locales around the Americas.

Highlighted will be composer H. Owen Reed’s “La Fiesta Mexicana: A Mexican Folk Song Symphony for Concert Band.” Reed’s most-performed composition is a result of a Guggenheim Fellowship that allowed him to immerse himself for six months in the cultures around Mexico City. The celebratory music he heard, absorbed and copied during this time was from the celebrations surrounding the mid-December Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe, with the sounds of church bells calling the people to celebrate, the ever-present fireworks, cantina bands and the staged Aztec dance in La Zona Rosa.

The concert also will feature “Roma” by Valerie Coleman; “Give Us This Day” by David Maslanka; “March” from “Symphonic Metamorphosis” by Paul Hindemith, transcribed by Keith Wilson; “October” by Eric Whitacre; and “Danzón No. 2” by Arturo Márquez, transcribed by Oliver Nickel.
