UW in the News

State, national and international media frequently feature the University of Wyoming and members of its community in stories. Here is a summary of some of the recent coverage:

The Casper Star-Tribune (CS-T) noted that before the Joint Appropriations Committee began reviewing the biannual budget, the governor approved funding several projects, including an addition to the UW College of Law. He supports partially funding the project -- the rest would be privately funded.

Natural Gas Intelligence (NGI) noted Gov. Mark Gordon’s budget proposal that targets low-carbon options to help boost the state’s economy. NGI, a leading provider of natural gas and shale news/market data for the energy industry, also mentioned UW as developing low-carbon research.

UW Department of Zoology and Physiology Professor Merav Ben-David has announced her candidacy for the U.S. Senate, report the CS-T and Laramie Boomerang.

Brad LaCroix, superintendent of Weston County School District 1 in Newcastle, has been appointed to fill the unexpired term of Wava Tully on the UW Board of Trustees. Wyo4News published UW’s announcement on its website. The CS-T published a similar article.

UW scientists have documented that a new approach to mine reclamation is more successful in reviving native plants and supporting species diversity, the CS-T reported.

UW’s astronomy and physics program was rated No. 12 in Great Value Colleges’ “Top 25 Most Affordable Colleges for a Bachelor’s Degree in Astronomy for 2020.” Criteria included the “school’s cost and return on investment, academic quality, diversity efforts, student support system and unique features that stand out in the crowd.”

Jonathan Naughton, UW Wind Energy Research Center director, discussed with Wyoming Public Media why southeast Wyoming is seeing an increase in new wind development.

The CS-T interviewed UW economist Rob Godby for an article that focused on a Western utility that is transitioning away from coal, but the move will not include closing any coal operations in Wyoming.

UW’s School of Pharmacy and the owners of Stitches Acute Care Center are collaborating to expand their telemedicine services to reach rural Wyoming residents, according to The Wyoming Tribune Eagle.

The Rocket Miner published UW’s release announcing that UW Alumni Association scholarship applications for the 2020-21 academic year are now available.

The career of William Ruckelshaus, for whom the Ruckelshaus Institute -- a division of UW’s Haub School of Environment and Natural Resources -- is named, was featured by WyoFile. Ruckelshaus, former Environmental Protection Agency director, died late last semester.

Wyo4News published UW’s release announcing a new blockchain course that will aid business opportunities. The course will be offered this semester through the UW College of Business.

Thomas Foulke, UW senior research scientist, discussed with Wyoming Public Radio the use of ancient grains to see if there is a potential business opportunity to create a profitable crop for local farmers.

Oil City News was among media outlets that published UW’s release announcing the launching of the Wind River Startup Challenge this month. The challenge gives tribal member entrepreneurs the opportunity to receive funding to start businesses.

More than 1,700 participants answered an online study indicating that, among both religious and nonreligious residents, morality played a role in food choices. UW researchers were among scientists conducting a series of experiences to judge how people’s moral values affected the types of food they consume, according to The State Press.

The Independent Record, in Helena, Mont., cited UW Professor Neil Humphrey’s past research in an article focusing on glacier melt in Montana’s Glacier National Park.

Former UW football player Mark Nzeocha is preparing to play in the Super Bowl for the San Francisco 49ers in Miami Sunday, Feb. 2. The German-born player was profiled in The Daily Hunt, published in Bangalore, India.

Hits 106 and The Rocket Miner reported that Tom Burman, UW director of athletics, received a civic leadership award from “Wyoming We the People: The Citizen and the Constitution” -- a civic education organization. Burman was honored for bringing members of the Black 14 back to UW last fall to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the players being dismissed from the football team.
