UW in the News

State, national and international media frequently feature the University of Wyoming and members of its community in stories. Here is a summary of some of the recent coverage:

The Washington Post interviewed UW economist Linda Thunstrom for an article, titled “The government has spent decades studying what a life is worth. It hasn’t made a difference in the COVID-19 crisis.” Thunstrom and her UW colleagues have published extensively on the subject the last two months. Insurance Journal and London’s The Independent published similar articles.

UW law Professor Michael Duff discussed with The American Prospect why workers’ compensation insurers are -- in some cases -- pushing claimants to resume surgical procedures in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, and why some are balking at the idea.

Duff was interviewed by Claims Journal regarding how Wyoming legislation falls short of creating a presumption that would ensure infected workers get benefits during the pandemic. He and others discussed the issue for an article, titled “More States Push COVID-19 Claims to Work Comp.”

Coal Zoom interviewed UW economist Rob Godby for an article focusing on Arch Coal’s decision to move away from thermal coal.

KUNR, a public radio station in Reno, Nev., spoke with Christine Porter, a UW kinesiology and health associate professor, on the topic “Many Rural Areas in the Mountain West Avoided COVID-19’s First Wave. Are They Ready for a Second?”

The UW School of Energy Resources’ research at the Dry Fork facility near Gillette was cited in a Proactive Investors article that focused on Clean Coal Technologies Inc. developing the world’s first commercially viable and scalable coal dehydration technology that creates stable, dust-free coal.

Two UW College of Engineering and Applied Science graduates won top honors in UW’s first mortar board decoration competition, reported The Rocket Miner.

The Rocket Miner also published UW’s release announcing that Leslie Rush was recently named the College of Education’s interim dean.

The UW Board of Trustees recently approved a new campus master plan, setting a course for the next 20 years, reported Wyoming Public Radio.

Wyoming Public Radio reported that UW graduate student Michael Curran’s research in looking to improve reclamation on well pads for oil and gas fields has gained national attention.

Founder Charles Hoskinson explained in a Coin Telegraph interview why UW represents a better return on investment for IOHK, the company charged with the development of Cardano, than prestigious schools such as Harvard, MIT or Cornell. Crypto Daily published a similar article.

KGAB Radio published UW’s release noting that two Wyoming high school students who qualified from the Wyoming State Science Fair, earlier this spring at UW, participated last week in the virtual International Science and Engineering Fair.

UW Athletics Director Tom Burman told WyoSports that he expects there will be a football season this fall and that the university’s athletes will return later this summer to begin workouts.
