UW in the News

July 20, 2020

State, national and international media frequently feature the University of Wyoming and members of its community in stories. Here is a summary of some of the recent coverage:

UW officials have announced a more detailed plan of what partial closures might look like if the number of COVID-19 cases on campus spikes this fall semester, according to The Laramie Boomerang. UW will have options for either a “targeted pause” or a “short-term closure” that are less drastic than the monthslong closure last semester.

Wyoming News Now, KGAB Radio and Hits 106 were among media outlets publishing UW’s release announcing that new President Ed Seidel will spend his first 77 days in office listening, learning and building connections with residents across the state. The Laramie Boomerang published a similar article.

University Business noted how universities are preparing for students this fall during the current COVID-19 pandemic. UW’s move-in plan, which includes the requirement of masks for students and visitors, was highlighted as one of the safety measures being taken. The Deseret News, Wyo4News and Laramie Live published similar articles. K2 Radio noted that visitors to campus also will be required to wear face masks.

UW Associate Professor Christine Porter, a public health expert, was selected as Wyoming’s representative on InStyle’s “The Badass 50: Healthcare Workers Who Are Saving the Day.” The magazine highlighted the women for their tireless efforts during the nationwide COVID-19 pandemic, saying “We went state by state to celebrate them not only for what they’ve done but also for who they are.”

Wyoming PBS interviewed Porter for an episode of its “Farm to Fork Wyoming” program. The episode, titled “Farmers Markets in the New Normal,” focused on how local food producers and farmers markets are rising to the challenge during the COVID-19 pandemic.

National Public Radio interviewed Bilal Madjour, a UW architectural engineering senior, on the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s rule that, if a college is conducting online learning only in the fall, international students will have their visas revoked. However, the Trump administration last week rescinded the order after congressional and public backlash.

A recent report by the National Bureau of Economic Research stated that coal counties, including those in the Powder River Basin, could lose up to 20 percent of revenues if the coal industry continues to decline. County 17 interviewed UW economist Rob Godby about the report.

BioBlitz is asking Wyoming residents to take pictures of wildlife and plants so that scientists can get a snapshot of the ecosystem in the state. UW’s Biodiversity Institute is part of the project, according to Wyoming Public Radio.

The Casper Star-Tribune (CS-T) noted that state-mandated furloughs would affect lab staff processing coronavirus samples. Chad Baldwin, UW’s associate vice president for communications and marketing, said that UW employees are assisting in the lab, but will not be affected by the furlough since they are university employees.

In the latest UW statewide survey, residents say they would support a mask ordinance for indoor settings, while overall anxiety about the coronavirus has climbed over the past month, reported The CS-T.

Wyoming News Now noted that the Wyoming Game and Fish Commission approved the Wyoming Chronic Wasting Disease Management Plan last week. UW’s Ruckelshaus Institute and the Haub School of Environment and Natural Resources facilitated statewide meetings.

UW’s Construction Management Program has received “candidate status” from the American Council of Construction Education -- the first step in a two-step process to gain national accreditation. Oil City News published UW’s release on the announcement. The website also published UW’s release announcing the statewide telehealth survey results.

Sheridan Media published UW’s release noting that UW Extension’s Office of Communications and Technology recently received several honors from the Association for Communication Excellence.

Tristan Bohlman, from Powell, was recently recognized as the best spring semester undergraduate neuroscience minor student from UW’s Neuroscience Program. The Powell Tribune published UW’s release noting the award.

Big Horn Basin Radio Network, KGAB Radio and Oil City News published UW’s release noting that a new study from UW and other researchers shows that rural voters in the West have a strong commitment to environmental protection.

Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, UW’s 25th annual Snowy Range Summer Dance Festival was held through a virtual format last week. KGAB Radio published UW’s announcement.

The Powell Tribune posted, on its website, UW’s release noting that the U.S. Health Resources and Services Administration recently awarded $2.1 million to UW’s Family Medicine Residency Program at Casper to expand primary care residency training in Wyoming.

The North Platte Telegraph published UW’s release about researchers studying alfalfa weevil control.

Rebecca Tharp, a UW doctoral degree family nurse practitioner candidate, was one of three nurses featured in Pregnancy Help News.

Sheridan Media noted that an agreement between UW and Sheridan for the university to operate the Sheridan incubator facility has been approved. UW will be more financially involved in and will operate the program in Sheridan County.

According to a UW Athletics release, graduated seniors Madi Fields, from Oceanside, Calif., in volleyball, and tennis player Ana Royo, of Vall De Uxo, Spain, will represent UW as 2020 nominees for the NCAA Woman of the Year Award.
