State, national and international media frequently feature the University of Wyoming and members of its community in stories. Here is a summary of some of the recent coverage:

Steve Harshman, speaker of the Wyoming House of Representatives, is sponsoring legislation that would provide $116 million to cover most of the costs of college tuition in the state, according to The Laramie Boomerang. Existing federal stimulus funds would pay for the program. The Casper Star-Tribune (CS-T) and Boomerang followed up that a legislative task force approved the measure late last week.

The Safari Club noted that Kevin Monteith, a UW associate professor, is leading the Deer-Elk Ecology Research Project that is evaluating the ecological relationships between elk and mule deer in areas where they share range in Wyoming.

UW law Professor Michael Duff was interviewed by Bloomberg for an article on how it is now easier to fire U.S. workers for what they say. In another Bloomberg piece, Duff was quoted on the Senate Republicans’ sweeping proposal to shield businesses from coronavirus-related liability that includes provisions for protecting employers from a range of workplace laws.

Primeur Weekly! Magazine published UW’s release noting that Professor Bart Geerts received a U.S. Department of Energy grant to study the effects of cold-air outbreaks in the Arctic, which is one of the fastest warming regions in the world.

UW economist Rob Godby commented in a CS-T article that focused on Wyoming lawmakers extending a bill that will allow more tax relief to oil and gas operators in the state.

K2 Radio, Wyo4News and Oil City News were among media outlets publishing UW’s release announcing that some Homecoming events, including the annual parade, would be canceled. Virtual events are being planned because of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

Environmental News Network noted that Brad Carr, a UW research scientist, is part of a Penn State-led research team that found seismic waves can help identify chemical reactions under an entire watershed and protect groundwater resources.

The Wyoming Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit at UW is part of a research study of mule deer movements in the northern Bighorn Mountains. Sheridan Media reported that researchers will expand the project in coming weeks with the deployment of radio collars on adult does.

Wyoming Public Radio interviewed UW Associate Professor Christine Porter about how each of Wyoming’s seven community colleges is preparing to offer courses to students this fall during the current COVID-19 pandemic. She outlined several factors on how the colleges’ staff and students can remain safe. USA Today gave a state-by-state breakdown on colleges opening this fall and included UW in the roundup.

A new major in entrepreneurship will be launched by UW’s College of Business this fall as part of the Bachelor of Science in business degree, as well as a redesigned business minor in entrepreneurship. 106.3 Cowboy Country and KGAB Radio published UW’s announcement.

Laramie Live published UW’s release announcing that the sixth annual The Artful Craft of Science (TACoS) summer camp was a virtual event this year. The TACoS camp drew more participants than the previous summer.

Three UW professors have been awarded a $750,000 grant from NASA to lead a team of researchers in developing machine learning materials and manufacturing methods for space. Oil City News and K2 Radio published UW’s release on the announcement.

My Hits 106 published UW’s release noting that the search committee for the position of dean of UW’s College of Arts and Sciences is accepting input on the three finalists.

UW Professor Ken Sims wrote a column, titled “Jim Bridger: Yellowstone’s Spinner of Tall Tales,” for Yellowstone Caldera Chronicles, a weekly column written by scientists and collaborators of the Yellowstone Volcano Observatory. The Fairfield Sun Times published the article.

Wind River Radio Network published UW’s release noting that the College of Agriculture and Natural Resource’s First-grains Project made its first sale to a Torrington business.

UW accounting and finance Assistant Professor Mackenzie Festa offered tips about credit card consolidation loans in a WalletHub column.

UW had 107 student-athletes named to the 2019-2020 Mountain West Conference’s scholar-athlete team, up from 101 in 2018-19, according to a UW Athletics media release.
