UW in the News

August 24, 2020

State, national and international media frequently feature the University of Wyoming and members of its community in stories. Here is a summary of some of the recent coverage:

Forbes interviewed UW economist Rob Godby regarding Peabody Energy and Arch Resources -- the nation’s two largest coal mining companies -- that want to combine their operations in a bid to cut costs and harness economies of scale. The two companies control 60 percent of the Powder River Basin coal industry.

In coal country, PacifiCorp’s plans to spend nearly $4 billion in Wyoming on wind development in the state are welcome news, according to WyoFile. UW’s Godby says the plan is a chance to diversify the economy and move to a fuel-secure outcome where the state could produce electricity for several more decades. Energy News Network published the article.

Enrollment at UW has rebounded recently after Gov. Mark Gordon approved grant funding to students, The Casper Star-Tribune (CS-T) reported. The Wyoming Tribune Eagle published a similar article.

UW President Ed Seidel was quoted in Inside Higher Ed on the university’s COVID-19 plan for twice-weekly testing of students and once-weekly testing of staff and faculty. UW will process tests in-house using its veterinary diagnostic laboratory and will have results within 24 hours to allow for prompt contact tracing and isolation of infected individuals.

UW’s Will Laegreid, the director of the Wyoming State Veterinary Lab, told Wyoming Public Radio that veterinary labs around the country have been asked to help with the human testing for coronavirus. UW expects to conduct thousands of individual tests each week when all students return to campus late next month.

The CS-T reported that pre-return testing resulted in an increase in confirmed coronavirus cases among UW personnel and students last week. Wyo4News published UW’s release on the latest numbers, and Voice of America published a related story.

Investor’s Business Daily mentioned UW’s uptick in reported coronavirus cases for an article, titled “U.S. Coronavirus Update: As School Cases Surge, U.S. Covid Progress May Be Stalling.”

Carbon Capture Journal published UW’s release noting that work toward a commercial-scale geological carbon dioxide storage complex near Gillette would move to the next stage with a geophysical survey.

U.S. Sen. John Barrasso, who led a field hearing at the Dry Fork Power Station near Gillette last week, included in his prepared remarks the UW School of Energy Resources’ (SER) research in carbon capture. SER Executive Director Holly Krutka also spoke at the event, according to a Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works media release. The CS-T covered the field hearing. The Laramie Boomerang published Barrasso’s comment on the event. The Gillette News Record published a related article.

UW’s Wyoming Survey and Analysis Center’s (WYSAC) latest survey that focused on state residents wearing face masks amid the pandemic was published by K2 Radio.

Cowboy State Daily and 106.3 Cowboy Country published another WYSAC survey that indicated alcohol consumption and sales increased during the first few months of the COVID-19 pandemic.

This summer, UW student Jason Fantl, from Parker, Colo., had the chance to work on the architecture of high-speed, delay-tolerant networking through a NASA internship. Because of the current pandemic, students completed their internships through a virtual format, according to a NASA media release. Florida’s Space Coast Daily published the release.

The Jerusalem Post featured UW Professor Merav Ben-David in an article, titled “Israeli-American scientist wins Wyoming’s Democratic Senate primary.” Ben-David will square off against Republican candidate Cynthia Lummis in the November general election. The Times of Israel and The Jewish News of Northern California published similar articles.

Ben-David also was mentioned in a New York Times piece, titled “Senate, House Races With All Women a First in Equality State.”

Wyoming Public Media interviewed student Krista Sullivan on how UW nursing students receive hands-on clinical training before they graduate. Sullivan helps run simulations that give UW nursing students crucial experience caring for patients.

Colorado Parks and Wildlife officials worked this summer with a UW graduate student to evaluate trail usage around Steamboat Springs and any correlations with its effects on elk herds, according to The Steamboat Pilot & Today.

The Boomerang interviewed Shane Murphy, a UW associate professor of atmospheric science, about hazy conditions caused by Colorado wildfires. He said that it is important for community members to know where to get air quality data for their area, and those different levels can have implications on personal health.

Oil City News published UW’s release noting that Army Capt. Stephen Russell, a UW nursing graduate, was assigned to participate in the standing up of a Respiratory Virus Evaluation Center to assist with COVID-19 testing and treatment at Fort Bliss, Texas. The Gillette News Record also published the release.

UW is listed at No. 8 in College Magazine’s “Top 10 Colleges for Snowboarders.” The magazine’s website notes the UW Snowboard Club’s activities.

Hits 106 Radio published UW’s release announcing program plans for the third annual Wyoming Blockchain Stampede this fall.

UW Athletics Director Tom Burman discussed how football programs across the country have not worked well together in determining rules in whether to play this fall amid the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, according to The CS-T.
