UW in the News

State, national and international media frequently feature the University of Wyoming and members of its community in stories. Here is a summary of some of the recent coverage:

Christelle Khalaf, associate director of UW’s Center for Business and Economic Analysis, was interviewed by National Public Radio about the recently passed $1.2 trillion infrastructure bill and what to expect. Khalaf said the infrastructure bill will mean lower costs for producers and more jobs.

Forbes mentioned the UW School of Energy Resources’ (SER) two grants from the U.S. Department of Energy for projects in the Powder River Basin, and in the Greater Green River and Wind River basins. UW scientists are researching rare earth elements resources that lie in coal and coal ash.

The Casper Star-Tribune (CS-T) noted that UW’s SER is collaborating with an Oklahoma firm to explore commercial production of hydrogen in the state. The study could ultimately lead to construction of a billion-dollar hydrogen hub in southwestern Wyoming.

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch interviewed UW economist Rob Godby on the two largest coal companies in the U.S. -- Arch and Peabody -- and the narrative the two are using in an attempt to stay afloat.

In a K2 Radio interview, UW law Professor Michael Duff said that, based on previous court rulings, it is unlikely that any law the Wyoming Legislature passes related to blocking COVID-19 vaccine mandates will be upheld in federal court due to Supreme Court precedent. Duff, who has spoken with other national media on the issue, is a former National Labor Relations Board attorney.

The CS-T reported that a major reorganization of UW’s academic programs would proceed, but implementation of some significant components would be delayed by a year. Wyoming News Now published UW’s release noting that the proposal will be presented to the UW Board of Trustees next week.

UW Professors Bryan Shuman and J.J. Shinker were interviewed for a WyoFile piece that cited the university’s research that focused on Wyoming’s climate data to learn how climate change is playing out in the state.

UW School of Pharmacy Dean Kem Krueger was interviewed by The CS-T about what he looks for when vetting medical research and what might indicate incomplete or inaccurate results. The interview was for an article titled “Citing medical research? It’s not as simple as it seems.”

UW’s seventh annual Giving Day, held during Homecoming, was record-breaking, with three times the financial support and more than 1,200 more donors than before. Laramie Live published UW’s release noting that $2,421,333 was raised from 3,629 donors across the U.S. and the world.

Wyoming Public Radio interviewed UW Assistant Professor Jerod Merkle for a feature focusing on how diet, migration and climate change affect Wyoming’s big-game animals.

County 10 and WyoToday Media published UW’s release announcing that the third annual Wind River Startup Challenge is now taking applications. UW’s IMPACT 307 business incubator program, in coordination with Central Wyoming College and other local partners, hosts the competition.

Volunteers are needed to read the names of military members who died serving their country for a Veterans Day event Nov. 11 at UW. Wyoming News Now published UW’s release.

KGAB Radio published UW’s release announcing that Bridger Walker, from Cheyenne, who saved his sister from being attacked by a dog in summer 2020, will be honored at a reception at the UW Geological Museum this Friday.
