Service Learning Resources at UW:

About Service Learning:

Service Learning is a credit-based educational experience in which students participate in an organized service activity that: meets identified community needs, an that students reflect on the service activity in such a way as to gain further understanding of course content, a broader appreciation for the discipline, and come away with an enhanced sense of civic responsibility.

When students take a service learning class at UW they have community service requirements in addition to academic requirements.  UW offers service learning courses in Engineering, Health Sciences, Councilor Education, American Studies, and many more.

For Students:

There are a number of academic classes offered each semester that incorporates service learning into the course work.  Please contact the CVS for more information about service learning at UW by emailing cvs@uwyo.edu.

Examples of past service learning classes include: social work students traveling to New Orleans to assist hurricane victims, a social justice class applying concepts learned to the Lincoln Community Center, and  an engineering classes investigating possible uses for the historic Fox theater in downtown Laramie, to name a few.

For Faculty:

The Center for Volunteer Service's goal is to promote volunteerism as a path towards greater civic engagement among its students.  One way this task is accomplished is through supporting faculty lead service learning initiatives.    The CVS can help by:

  • Providing books and other resources in our Service Learning Resource Center.
  • Introducing faculty members to non-profits in the community that could form positive community partnerships for service learning projects.
  • Give presentations to students about the importance of volunteering and civic engagement
  • Give presentations to service learning classes about the educational philosophy behind it.
  • Provide information about funding opportunities for class service projects
  • Course and/or syllabus development assistance is available.

The CVS will also be starting a Service Learning support group this fall.  Interested faculty should contact the CVS for more information.
