The Wyoming Institute for Disabilities partners with the College of Engineering and Applied Science to facilitate students in the senior design class toward the design and production of assistive technology device prototypes. Devices are created based on requests from individuals in Wyoming who have a specific assistive technology needs. Recently, seniors James Branscomb and Scott Rigg designed a communication system for an individual who is deaf that will allow her to communicate with others through dual keyboards, screen displays as well as projected sound. Dr. Steven Barrett, Ph.D., P.E., and CEAS associate dean for academic programs, who advises seniors said, “We encourage our students to make and maintain contact with the individual or family while they are working on the project.” Encourage other requests, Barrett continued, “There is no need to worry if a project is too big or too small, and it is completely free of charge.”
After their presentation at the UW Senior Design Symposium, Branscomb (Left) and Rigg (Right) showed off their assistive technology device. Branscomb said, “This was the third time the project was attempted, and we were happy to be able to complete it.”
