Blair served on the submarine U.S.S. Guardfish during his navy career. The Guardfish sank more than 200,000 tons of Japanese shipping as a result of its twelve war patrols and three years of service during World War II. Blair served on two long war patrols for which he was awarded the Submarine Combat Insignia.
